Tree Squares

Enchanted by the slender, monochrome birch trees that grow in abundance in her northern Connecticut home, sculptor Dana Brandwein and her team created these arboreal odes in creamy porcelain. Sheets of birch bark are harvested and rolled into slabs of porcelain to create the unique scores exhibited on the surface of the dishware. The intricate impressions are then rubbed with a dark gray glaze and wiped to fade the bark's texture into the ceramic's pale surface. The pieces are then dipped into a clear gloss glaze to preserve the organic patterning and to create a finish that is both food- and dishwasher-safe. The hand of the artist can be felt in the careful construction of each piece, elevating everyday entertaining into a brush with artistry. Handmade in Connecticut.

DanaBrandwein Oates

Dana worked nearly 20 years in the music business before founding her own company. As a former record label marketing exec, she worked with a host of bands and artists, but a merger and a burning desire to be more creative opened the door to a big change.

Dana began making hand built ceramics in New York City in 2001. After leaving New York, she was taught wheel throwing in Connecticut by a local artist, Susan Fox. "Everything else has been experimentation...learning along the way better techniques, glaze mixing, slip casting, mold making etc."

Dana's husband, sculptor Daniel Oates, joined her in 2008 adding hand crafted custom wood furniture to their mix of ceramics and lighting. Their company is now a lifestyle brand focused on the luxury of handmade items for the home. Dana and Daniel's work is in trendsetting shops across the country and in Paris, and has been featured in magazines including Food&Wine, Elle Decor, Martha Stewart Living, Whole Living, Bon Appetit, Martha Stewart Weddings, Country Living, Real Simple and New England Home. collection
