Strawberry Feels Forever
Often the first fruits of summer, strawberries are fast-growing gifts from Mother Nature. But to create her strawberry-inspired berry bowl, Sarah Beth Elkins takes her time and uses some intriguing tools. Starting with stoneware clay, she hand throws each bowl on her wheel and then creates the exterior seed pattern with an interesting hack: "I love using household items to make my alterations to thrown pieces," she says. "And for the seeds of the strawberry I use an old mechanical pencil (without lead)." To create the all-important drainage holes of this handheld colander, she uses another repurposed tool—a power drill.
With the addition of hand-shaped leaves and a stem to serve as a handle, Sarah Beth's piece is glazed and fired in juicy red and green, ready to rinse and serve your favorite berries in an adorably apt package. Handmade in Houston, home of the world's largest strawberry shortcake (in nearby Pasadena, Texas).
