In Your Element

Inspired by the four elements into which the 12 astrological signs are grouped--earth, air, fire, and water--Ellen Bartfeld's glass jewelry bowls encapsulate the essence of your sign, whether you're a fiery Leo, a down-to-earth Capricorn, a tranquil Pisces, or an easy breezy Aquarius. Each glass palm sized dish bowl is hand-cut from stained glass containing variety of rich colors, giving it a sumptuous, striated surface reminiscent of glossy marble. Atop each dish is a collection of glass beads and semi-precious stones that accent its vivid hues. Celebrate the star sign of your favorite astrology lover by giving them an eye-catching receptacle for a few of the most precious elements of their jewelry collection. Handmade in California.

“When I'm stuck creatively, I walk away from whatever it is I'm trying to do. It all usually becomes clear on my runs in the Santa Ynez Valley hills where I live and work.”

Ellen Bartfeld describes her practice in simple terms: “Each of my bowls is made with love.” And inspiration often comes from the customers themselves. “They might have requests,” says the glass artist, who crafts her wares in California’s Santa Ynez Valley, adorning them with symbolic objects. “I might be asked to find charms that are part of a wedding or bridesmaid theme. Every suggestion is a creative opportunity.” Once, Ellen created pieces for four sisters, using jewelry pieces from their late mother. “They were reminded of their mother every time they used their bowls,” she says. Even when her pieces are not personalized, they are still personal. Says Ellen, “I envision them on a dresser or by the bed, holding objects that have a special meaning.”
