Whether it\u2019s just a few volumes that you couldn\u2019t resist or a formidable tower threatening to topple over and crush you with its wordy weight, there\u2019s actually a name for your pile of unread books:\u00a0tsundoku.<\/em> This Japanese neologism describes the habit\u2014some would say admirable, others would say pathological\u2014of accumulating books that may never actually be read. The term is a playful mash-up of words that wonderfully describe the habit:\u00a0tsunde<\/em> (to stack things),\u00a0oku<\/em> (to leave for a while), and\u00a0doku<\/em> (to read). Roughly translated, the combination denotes a pile of printed procrastination. Some would argue that, read or unread,\u00a0tsundoku.<\/em> is a noble pursuit because well-designed books are objects of beauty in and of themselves. But if you do get around to reading that deluxe edition of Moby Dick that\u2019s been adrift in the\u00a0tsundoku<\/em>\u00a0doldrums for 12 years, just be careful if it\u2019s at the bottom of the stack.<\/p>\n
