Although it exists only in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcodesign.com\/3026226\/the-frank-lloyd-wright-skyscrapers-that-were-never-built\/1\" target=\"_blank\">a few impressively vertical drawings,<\/a> Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s <em>Illinois<\/em> skyscraper\u2014commonly known as the \u201cMile High\u201d building\u2014was, as the name suggests, to tower 5,280 feet over the city of Chicago. Although Wright professed to hate cities in general, he wasn\u2019t one to be outdone by the soaring glass boxes of the midcentury modern mainstream. His colossal\u00a0\u201cSky-City\u201d was a vision of a skyscraper to end all skyscrapers: 528 stories, 18.4 million square feet, nuclear-powered elevators, and parking for 15,000 cars and 150 personal helicopter pods. The <em>Illinois<\/em> never got off the drawing board, but its ambitious scale and bundled, crystalline structure inspired the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burjkhalifa.ae\/en\/the-tower\/factsandfigures.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Burj Khalifa,<\/a> currently the world\u2019s tallest building (though only about half the elevation of the <em>Illinois <\/em>proposal).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/4937909\" target=\"_blank\">Here\u2019s an amazing animation<\/a> of the Mile High building created by the Harvard Graduate School of Design.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/product\/skyline-of-love?source=blog_uk091416\" target=\"_blank\">Skyline of Love<\/a> | $160<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Mile High building, of course.
