On the street, you\u2019ve likely seen electronic paper without even realizing it\u2019s the physical screen driving so many portable readers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Project_Gutenberg\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Project Gutenberg<\/strong><\/a> evangelized the need for digitizing literature in the early \u201870s with an electronic library. It wasn\u2019t until late 2007 that early adopters embraced the Amazon Kindle. In the past three years, E Ink offspring have grown to include Sony\u2019s PRS-500, the Iliad, Barnes &amp; Noble\u2019s nook and the latest niche knockout, the iPad.<\/p>\n<p>It can fold, roll and mimic paper\u2019s every move \u2013 but long-term durability hasn\u2019t yet caught up with electronic paper&#8217;s technology (it\u2019s delicate). Until sturdier models hit the market, mainstream e-paper will likely circulate through devices.<\/p>\n<p>On July 1, E Ink announced the launch of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eink.com\/products\/matrix\/High_Res_Pearl.html\">Pearl<\/a><\/strong>, a suped-up version of its original Vizplex display. Offering 16 levels of gray for improved readability, more efficient energy consumption and a contrast ratio that\u2019s roughly 50 percent sharper than before, E ink inches closer to mending the user experience gap between page and screen. Considering nearly thirty percent of Indians live without electricity, it might swiftly address topical issues of connectivity and investment in less developed areas.<\/p>\n<p>Priced at 1,500 rupees \u2013 say, $32 \u2013 it offers 240 minutes of chatter on an eight-hour charge. Its debut this month is sure to spike sales among affluent networks and excite the development of sustainable solutions in the Indian marketplace. And with its added features &#8211; an FM radio and trail-blazing flashlight \u2013 this solar phone seems destined to rule traveler wish lists to come. Just one caveat: With a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economy_of_India\">p<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economy_of_India\">er capita income of\u00a0$1,030<\/a><\/strong>, most Indians \u2013 rural or not \u2013 earn roughly $2 a day.
