{"id":14222,"date":"2012-03-22T10:48:44","date_gmt":"2012-03-22T14:48:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uncommongoods.com\/?p=14222"},"modified":"2018-01-04T12:35:31","modified_gmt":"2018-01-04T17:35:31","slug":"winning-wordsmiths-favorite-uncommon-haiku","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/2012\/winning-wordsmiths-favorite-uncommon-haiku\/","title":{"rendered":"Winning Wordsmiths: Our Favorite Uncommon Haiku"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we announced our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/\/2012\/haiku\/\" title=\"haiku\" target=\"_blank\">haiku contest<\/a>, we knew our clever readers would present some great poetry, but we were blown away by the number (more than 250!) of uncommonly creative submissions we received! <\/p>\n<p>The winners earned spots in our most recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/static\/email_20120320.html?source=blog\" title=\"email\" target=\"_blank\">email<\/a> and took home the products they praised in their 17-syllable poems. Only one poet could win in each category, but we&#8217;re pleased to share some amusing honorable mentions.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/static\/email_20120320.html?source=blog\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/mentionhaiku.jpg\" alt=\"Haiku email\" title=\"mentionhaiku\" width=\"386\" height=\"198\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/mentionhaiku.jpg 386w, https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/mentionhaiku-300x153.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><\/a><\/div align=\"center\">\n<p>We&#8217;re glad MaryAnne Kate took a moment to show off her haiku skills, even though she wasn&#8217;t interested in any of the prizes! <\/p>\n<p>We also received this haiku by Carol Thurman after the contest.<\/p>\n<p><em>Love Uncommon Goods<br \/>\nAlways worth a second look<br \/>\nI missed the contest?!!!!!!!!!!!!!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re sorry to hear that Carol didn&#8217;t know about the contest. As you can see, she definitely has haiku skills! But, you never know, she may get another chance. We had so much fun reading everyone&#8217;s haiku, we might just have to hold another contest in the future.<\/p>\n<p>As bloggers for <em>The Goods<\/em>, we also got a chuckle out of Nate Biddick&#8217;s clever name drop in his poem about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/product\/tipping-teacup?source=blog\" title=\"tipping tea cup\" target=\"_blank\">Tipping Teacups<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Uncommon tea cup<br \/>\nswings and steeps and swings and steeps<br \/>\nand you sip the goods.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And Diana McCartney&#8217;s haiku made us thirsty.<\/p>\n<p><em>One cup black or white.<br \/>\nHot, green, black or chamomile.<br \/>\nI like mine at night.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But Reanna Reiner took the prize by making us long for tea time.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/product\/tipping-teacup?source=blog\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/teahaiku.jpg\" alt=\"tipping tea cups\" title=\"teahaiku\" width=\"391\" height=\"348\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/teahaiku.jpg 391w, https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/teahaiku-300x267.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><\/a><\/div align=\"center\">\n<p>While Reanna will have a new cup at her table the next time she sits down for tea, the winner of a new set of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/product\/periodic-table-building-blocks?source=blog\" title=\"blocks\" target=\"_blank\">building blocks<\/a>, Amanda Francis, is enjoying another table. She submitted this very uncommon entry:<\/p>\n<p><em>Flourine Uranium Nitrogen \u2013 Carbon Uranium Boron Einsteinium \u2013 Sulfur Helium \u2013 Tungsten Hydrogen Iodine Sulfure Phospherous Erbium Sulfur<br \/>\nYitrium Oxygen Uranium Thorium \u2013 Phosphorous Lanthanum Yitrium \u2013 Tungsten Iodine Thorium \u2013 Boron Arsenic Iodine Carbon Sulfur \u2013 Oxygen Flourine \u2013 Lithium Irone<br \/>\nCarbon Rhenium Astatine Electron \u2013 Germanium Nickel Uranium Sulfur Einsteinium<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes! Kelly Brooks&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/product\/recycled-glass-night-owl-nightlight?source=blog\" title=\"owl nightlight\" target=\"_blank\">Owl Nightlight<\/a> haiku started deep, but made us laugh in the end.<\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, wise one who hoots<br \/>\nLight the pathway to the truth.<br \/>\nOr to the bathroom.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And Eve Schuyler&#8217;s winning words made us thankful for safe, well-lit walkways. <\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/product\/recycled-glass-night-owl-nightlight?source=blog\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/owlhaiku.jpg\" alt=\"Owl Light\" title=\"owlhaiku\" width=\"367\" height=\"487\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/owlhaiku.jpg 367w, https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/owlhaiku-300x398.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/a><\/div align=\"center\">\n<p>We also received some humorous entries for the coveted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/product\/personalized-stump-ring?source=blog\" title=\"Stump Ring\" target=\"_blank\">Stump Ring<\/a>, but many poets took the sentimental route. <\/p>\n<p>Farida Doblado&#8217;s rhyming haiku might also work as pop love song.<\/p>\n<p><em>This stump may not grow<br \/>\nBut my love for you does so<br \/>\nThis I always know&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And Darla DeNyse&#8217;s haiku captures why the ring makes a great gift for a loved one.<\/p>\n<p><em>Tree mighty and tall<br \/>\nDeep grows the roots in the earth<br \/>\nWhat a stable life<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But Kat McNally&#8217;s winning haiku really captures what this beautiful design is all about.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/product\/personalized-stump-ring?source=blog\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/stumphaiku2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"stumphaiku2\" width=\"300\" height=\"330\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14256\" \/><\/a><\/div align=\"center\">\n<p>Kat&#8217;s salute to the Stump Ring and the other winning haiku are just a few of the clever poems featured in our latest email.
