Allison says: The year I lived in Brooklyn walking to work through the stately brown stone town houses, I passed the same trees everyday. Being from the mountains of Colorado I had never seen ginkgo trees with their leaves of such a startling and unique shape. After watching these leaves in three seasons they came to embody my time spent in Brooklyn Heights. One of my favorite places, filled with some of my favorite people.
I hand cut each leaf from aluminum sheet metal, I then carefully file all rough edges and hammer the aluminum on my anvil for strength, sophisticated luster, and organic soul. I then hand apply a unique brushed finish. The result is a lovely pebbled and dappled abstract texture under the modern brushing. I also breath life into each leaf by hand bending each lovely leaf into a slightly three dimensional shape. These are remarkably light and fresh, like spring time itself.I hand forge the ear wires from sterling silver.
Aluminum is the most plentiful metal on our planet Earth and has long been admired for it's beautiful never tarnishing luster and it's extremely light-weight nature. Because of it's low density it is much lighter than silver and other metals and has been greatly prized and utilized in the fields of aeronautics and aerospace. At one time aluminum was more costly than gold! Napoleon III, Emperor of France, is reputed to have given a banquet where the most honored guests were given aluminum utensils, while the others made do with gold.
