Mimi says: The phrase "Dream big. Start small." immediately inspired animal imagery large and small elephants and ants. When I realized that 'ant' was the last part of the word 'elephant' I wanted to find a unique way to design this by wrapping around front and back so there would be an element of surprise in the wordplay depending on the baby's position, there's a different visual and story. The front resolves with the tiny graphic ant daydreaming the phrase as shown in the watercolor thought bubbles.
I painted a variety of watercolor circles and wanted to incorporate them as a whimsical, artistic design element. I used photo reference to draw the elephant and ant a bit more realistically. I added texture to the elephant shape through the watercolor polka dots, and chose colors that seemed more gender-neutral and a bit sophisticated-baby. I tried different style renditions and ultimately decided to use fonts instead of hand done lettering (which I also love to do) to help the concept come across more clearly with the double-sided design.
