Many are interpretations of crystals, which are found in biological molecules and structures like DNA, enzymes and proteins. The crystals are grown and then photographed through a process called x-ray crystallography, which allows the scientist to discover the structure of these entities. I find these small crystals to be compositionally fascinating, and started a series of works to explore their forms more expressively. I wanted to give them more life and to feel less clinical. I used texture and loose brushstrokes and drawing materials to achieve this effect.
A lot can be said about such a complex design resulting in a simple response from us: awesome. Julia's scientific process has created something anyone can understand and enjoy.
