La Brea Recycled Record Album Collar

Not available for purchase.

PRODUCT STORY
These record collars are handmade from damaged records purchased at thrift stores. My ideal customer is someone who enjoys showing off and appreciates upcycled products. It's always fun to see the looks on people's faces when you tell them that the necklace that they just admired is made from an old record.

Congrats to Kelly Wakefield-Beytia, for her unique record collar, which made it as a semi-finalist in the Uncommon Jewelry Design Challenge. Let us know what you think! The top designs will go on to the final round where they'll be judged by our team of Kiel Mead, Jenn Falik and our very own Erin Fergusson.

I really like this piece. It has a classic look but the wearer is also sporting a little bit of musical history. Cute, and a good price, too!

I like the idea of recycling damaged record albums yet it looks as if it may be scratchy when worn.

While dowdy is definitely in the eye of the beholder. I can respond to the scratchiness. All rough edges are sanded with varying gradations of sandpaper until they are as smooth as a velvet Elvis.

I put a lot of importance on a high comfort level for my jewelry. This necklace is incredibly lightweight and does not pinch or poke, even when provoked.

My thumbs up vote is from experience owning a Kelly necklace. Internet photos are not lively and accurate to convey how much fun, crafty and unique her playful work is

groovy! Might make it less expensive. I saw some recycled record bowls (wavy like this) at Renegade Art Fair they were $12 or $15 each and were flying off the shelf.

Hi Terry, thank you for your input and for the thumbs up! The reason for the price difference is that record bowls are fairly easy to make, you just heat them up and form them over a mold. There are several additional steps involved in making these necklaces which makes them quite a bit more labor intensive than the bowls. Especially since each step is done by hand. I hope that this clears up any questions about the cost. I really do try to make my pieces as affordable as possible!

I think that until you explain it is an upcycled record it is just an uncomfortable awkward looking necklace.

I love recycled...yet this piece looks a little unfinished....just like you melted a record then said let's wear it. If more effort was put into placement of ruffles or if record was layered with another record and ruffled...the idea is so you transform the piece from it's original state...this still looks too much like you are wearing a record.

I like the idea of recycling records, but this looks like a piece of worn tire. Not attractive, at all.
