Make it Rain

Water is a recurring image in Zen meditation, whether it's as a symbol of spiritual and mental clarity, or a literal presence in the environment, calming the mind with its joyous trickling sound. This handcrafted necklace from artist Eileen Baumeister McIntyre captures some of that calming spirit, with a leaf-like pendant that cradles a cluster of shimmering, silver droplets. The droplets shift and shake as you move, creating a delicate pattering sound that suggests falling rain. The leaf form itself is crafted from a unique, Japanese alloy called shibuichi. A combination of silver and copper, shibuichi was used anciently to create the delicate ornamentation on Samurai swords.

McIntyre has studied both botanical illustration and metalworking, and she draws upon the traditions of both to create her stunning jewelry. She draws her inspiration from her own garden, often beginning with drawings or watercolors of the leaves, seeds and petals she loves. She then uses precious metals to transform those impressions into wearable works of art. Handmade in Long Island, New York.

“The shapes and textures of flowers, petals, seeds, vines, and leaves” are what stimulate Eileen Baumeister McIntyre’s creativity. Fortunately, she is able to find natural inspiration aplenty in the extensive organic garden that surrounds her Long Island studio.

Eileen, whose rich art training includes botanical illustration, often begins the creative process by opening up her sketchbook. “The simple act of slowly getting into the ‘zone’ usually sparks some kind of creative excitement for me,” she says. Expressing herself through precious metals in a process that involves hand-carving her jewelry and then casting it into sterling silver, Eileen says her designs are a “celebration of the enduring beauty of nature.”

    Comments about ZEN RAIN NECKLACE:

This piece is simple yet beautiful. It does make sound when you move or workout. The sound sometimes helps to remind me to breathe during those difficult times and be more "zen". I gave it four stars because the finish has worn off some, especially on the back. However to be fair I do not take off the pendant ever... so that might have helped wear the finish down. I've received several compliments on the pendant. As a jewelry designer I can appreciate the craftsmanship of this piece.
