Vicki and Richard Kung

Designers Vicki and Richard Kung are inspired by all things robotic and sci-fi. This focus on sleek, smooth lines and giving their pieces a futuristic feel lead to the metallic, interchangeable pieces comprising the Modular Candlestick Set and the out-of-this-word qualities in many of their designs.

The worlds of si-fi and design collide in Museum of Robots, the couple's homage to metallic mechanisms, where a love of robots, technology and product design combine in functional products for the home.

It's no surprise the duo is designing pieces fit for the future. Richard has been collecting robots for 25 years and Vicki is a lifelong sci-fi fan who got her first robot at age 6.

According to Richard and Vicki, "All our products are inspired by robots, which to us are the essence of modern and nostalgic, futuristic and retro, technical and playful, functional and entertaining, and perfectly represent our vision."

Museum of Robots is located in the suitably sci-fi, online world of Second Life. The Museum hosts digital exhibits dedicated to the appreciation of robots, whether historical, cinematic or literary.

How many in a set?

Thanks for the question, Emilie! The estimated price is for a set of four placemats. Happy voting!

Add a black chalk board edge at the front or back for a name plate. user could write it upright or for persons on opposite side of table to read it.. That would be worth an extra 10-15 dollars. Love the idea!

Are they washable?

Basically a nice concept, it just reminded me instantly of a Mickey Mouse, a Teddy Bear and a Puzzle piece. With a less iconic design it should work well.

I LOVE this!! and would be happy to get it! I love the fact that it is recycled and it just looks weird/different which is totally me! I like the unique look and just everything about it! =)

Thanks for all of your great feedback on these placemats! The mats come in a set of four, and should be washed by hand. According to the designers, the best way to wash them is in the sink with a little dish soap. Since they are made out of recycled plastic bottles, they can't be put in the dryer and should be air dried.

Excellent concept. Great price point. However, the design is pedestrian.

Vote: Thumbs down!

neat idea but too pricey
