Deep Pockets

Great things come in small packages. Case in point: this funky micro-wallet has two slots for your credit cards, a central pocket for cash, and a slide-out slot for your ID or transit pass. Not only that, it also makes room to support health care, education and fair wage employment for impoverished craftspeople in India. The card cases' colorful appearance is created with discarded plastic bags and newspapers, which are collected from the streets of Delhi and washed using natural soaps and disinfectants. The bags are then heat fused together to form the wallet material, and then cut out and sewn into shape. Wallet comes in blue and rainbow. Sold separately. Each is one-of-a-kind and will vary slightly. Handmade in India.

  • Item ID: 21095
  • Materials: polyester, newspaper, cardboard, recycled plastic bags
  • 4" L X 3" H
  • Washing not necessary. Natural aging adds character.

Hello, Voters! We can't wait to hear what you have to say about these recycled, biodegradable card cases! We love that the artisans creating these cases are given a fair wage, health care and education. Would you rather tote your cards and cash in the newsprint case or the colorful version?

Ann

I love the fact that it's helping people in India, but will all wallets look like the gray and rainbow one? Or will we order one for a boy and find a pink one sitting in our mail box? How reliable are the designs?

The story behind it means more to me than the color, I must confess.

Nice concept - are all of the designs unique and 'one of a kind' or do only two options exist?

Thanks for the question, Emmie! These are handmade, so each case will be unique. If accepted into our assortment, we would work to give the customer as much choice as possible (for example, if we offered two styles, you could choose between solids or patterns, or bright or neutral colors). Which style do you like best?

noice!

hey everyone, thanks for the kind words. i just wanted to quickly mention, that these wallets are available in grey and the multi color (soon to be blue and purple as well). the multi color is always an assortment of color. but for the grey, blue and purple they are sorted by color, the only element that will vary is the newspaper print on the outside which will vary from wallet to wallet. some have more text others other more graphics etc. hope that helps!!michael rad, holstee co-founder

The upcycled wallet is fab. I've been a proud owner for a few months and I get compliments on it's style time and again. I have a grey one but a few friends nabbed the multicolor. It's a quality purchase for a great cause. You can't beat that.

I love it, and I'm positive my teen daughter would as well.

Very nice design. I'd be interested in a bigger/wallet/card caddy version as well.

Id like it even more if it was long enough for 6 or 7 slots, and had a compartment for bills (or receipts) and a zipper along the length for security

I love this!

should be about $15 though

I really like it but it's way too expensive!

i am a germophobe so plastic bags from india does not thrill me - you did not say if they had been disinfected - although the cause is good i prefer products made in the usa given our current economic crisis

Elena

but, I don't know about it begin worth $25

i like this concept and give it a thumbs up. however, for the price i'd like to see a longer version that holds more than 2 cards. i have one of the flat longer cases and love that it holds cash too.

Sandy

Nice, useful item, but a very similar one is available elsewhere for $12.

LOVE IT! I would SO buy one (or more for gifts)!!

I love the idea, but I find the price really high for such a small case. It would help if I knew how much of the $25 goes to the producers, but even then, I'd hesitate to buy it.

I'd like to know how much of the proceeds from this item actually goes back to the community in India. I also think its a bit overpriced for the size.

Nancy

Somany good-looking recycled items are out there - but this is average looking, too expensive, and I'm just tired of cute quotes on everything.

So cute!

price is a bit high, even though it is upcycled. it would have to be with free shipping for me to purchase. great idea though!

Emily

Love that it's using discarded plastic bags. It's cleaning up the streets and employing under- and unemployed people.

Cathleen

A bit pricey, especially given the current U.S. economic conditions. How much of the $25 benefits those making these?

Dodi

Very cool, but seems a little bit more than I would want to spend...maybe $15 or $20 would be more what I would expect.

If this fits in the back pocket of jeans - perfect!!! I have been looking for something like this for years. The one I have now is falling apart and the company stopped making them. I WILL buy this as soon as you sell it.

Especially like the rainbow colored one. Like the small size and ability to hold multiple items.

Stacey

These are great! Especially the top one. And the fact that they are made of recycled plastic bags is wonderful!

Bonnie

A great size!

I have need for a larger sized wallet that this one that appears only to hold several cards. Having said that, perhaps this might be a good gift idea for men who do not need the extra compartments, etc.

Agree the price should be lower, please. also I like denim and rainbow styles.

Jamie

Love the newsprint one!

Eliza
Vote: Thumbs up!

I love the colorful pattern of the wallet shown on the bottom! It would make a great gift! I like that it's made by people who really need the opportunity to take care of themselves

Judy

I love the colors and love the idea, but it is a bit pricey. I have a black one for which I spent 5 bucks.

Rebecca

Most of us carry far more than 2 pieces of plastic and a few bills, so a case needs to have greater capacity than this to be useful/flexible. Also, the stitching looks crummy.

Raven

I love the idea of using recycled bags, and especially the idea that it helps provide for the impoverished, but while we're struggling financially here I can't imagine spending $25 for a pouch that's really unnecessary to have. If it were $10, I'd think about it (and probably still decline to purchase, but at least it would be more affordable).

I have bought things similarly made in india. they are always of high quality. i admit i would want something brighter than the newsprint, and there would need to be either a disclaimer of "let us choose one for you" or a division of "newsprint or brights" for me. i just need to know what's coming!

Thelma
Vote: Thumbs up!

i like both and can't wait for more colors!!

Mari

This seems like the perfect wallet for a dress pocket or bike ride back pocket. Smart and charming.

Great questions all, especially about how these wallets support Indian workers. The makers of this wallet have partnered with a non-profit in India to provide fair wages, education and health care for the workers and their families.

Great reuse of materials in supporting people in need - doesn't get any better then this!

Kat

Cute, but a bit too expensive and hate the quotes.

Allison

good price point, good story behind the product, environmentally sound. Well done UG.

Tina
Vote: Thumbs up!

Wonderful idea and great concept. I do wish the price were a bit less, or that the cost was for two of the wallets.

Amanda
Vote: Thumbs up!

Beautiful! Wonderful! I like the price too!

Sarah

I don't "own" a man who would carry this!

Bridget
Vote: Thumbs up!

price seems high but since it is supporting a cause and recycled it would be worth it

Jessamyn

Cool item for a great price.

V

Interesting, but not great

Marie

In case you haven't noticed, we have impoverished people here in the USA that are unemployed, with an economy that is in the toilet. How about you scout the USA and put out feelers for crafts here?
