Bright & Early

Start your day off with a little art appreciation courtesy of artist Pamela Corwin's cheerful alarm clocks.

Inspired by Corwin's original acrylic and watercolor paintings, these prints give the normally dreaded alarm clock a much needed and much friendlier new look.

Each clock has a special detail that circles the face on an invisible second hand--a lush bouquet of tulips is tended to by a miniature watering can, and a sleepy crescent moon keeps an eye on a wandering star. These lightweight clocks are a perfect bedside companion, or add a joyful splash to any corner in your home or office. Made in USA.

Pamela Corwin

Artist Pamela Corwin works in acrylics and watercolors, sometimes adding elements of collage to her work. She has been in business since 1981 and her work has been featured on several national television shows and in magazines such as House Beautiful, Seventeen and Pacific Northwest. In 1996, she was commissioned to paint an egg for the White House Easter tree and designed the Pike Place Market Festival Poster in 2000. Pamela also teaches local classes on the business of crafts.

"For as long as I can remember I have painted, sketched, and made things out of anything on hand," Pamela says. "As a child, I drew on rocks, napkins, my jewelry boxes, and painted on the lamp and clock next to my bed (much to my mother's dismay, I am sure).

"Art has always been the way I lose myself, calm myself, it is meditative for me. It comes more from a drive than a desire. I don't know how not to do it. It's as much what keeps me alive as food and oxygen."

Comments about TULIP OR MOON & STAR ALARM CLOCKS:

I got the moon design. It's cute, great size for travel if you want to use an actual clock rather than your phone, and if you don't mind that there's no snooze button. I knew this before buying this from reading another review, and there is no light either.

Once you pull up the sliding switch to set the alarm, the only way to turn it off is by pushing it back down. Alarm is off, and that's it. So not great for those who need the alarm to go off a few times to wake up or like the "waking up slowly" method, which is me, but I really liked the moon design and want to support the artists on this site, so I decided to purchase it anyway (at sale price).

Instructions say that when you pull the alarm switch up, which is on the back of the clock at the top, you'll see a white bar appear to indicate that the alarm is on. Mine doesn't show a white bar, but I'm guessing it's simply done by painting the front of the switch so that it shows only when pulled up.

Also, alarm isn't the most convenient to set. Let's say you want it to go off at 7:45. It won't be exact unless you spend the little extra time to get it as close as possible. There are no dots or anything to signify the space in-between the hours. So if you want 7:30, then you'll have to put the alarm hand in the middle of 7 and 8 and eye it.

I definitely don't think it is worth full price, or maybe even the sale price, but it's probably because many people expect alarm clocks to have more features which have become regular features, and this clock is very simple. It tells the time and will sound an alarm a maximum of once at a time.

But it's a cute, decorative piece that is still useful, and if you don't mind small clocks!
