Terrell Powell, located in Austin, Texas, produces colorful, two-dimensional metal sculptures inspired by happy childhood memories. His work showcases simple and vibrant houses, flowers, animals, suns and trees made of a surprising and irreverent combination of colors and patterns.
Powell's former career as professional illustrator lends itself to the flat, collage appearance of his work. He finds inspiration from folk, naive and outsider art and uses airbrushing to complete his steel sculptures. Not one to follow the rules, Powell strives for the spontaneity and free-spirited quality of children's and naive art. "Real folk and naive artists are compelled to create and don't over intellectualize their art. Children and naive artists don't know rules about art; art flows from them."
