A Different Ball of Wax

Add a touch of exoticism to any outfit with these eye-catching necklaces. Reminiscent of radiant agate and glossy ivory, each bead is carved from sustainable tagua, commonly referred to as "vegetable ivory" for its likeness in bulk and texture. Each exuberant element is enlivened by artisans using Batik, a traditional method wherein a design is applied using wax, then the object is dyed and the wax is removed to reveal a distinctive and unique silhouette of the wax seal.

Tagua is environmentally friendly and helps curb illegal elephant poaching, prevents deforestation, and allows local communities to make a living from the collection and processing of the seeds. All of Monica Farbiarz's tagua jewelry is handmade in a Colombian workshop that prides itself on treating workers fairly and providing the opportunity to learn life skills.

I love the design and the idea. but the price is WAAAAY too high. You could sell this for 20 bucks less and still make a good profit.

Still don't know what vegetable ivory is.

too expensive for me, but maybe someone else would think it's worth the price

Thanks for the comment, Elinore! Vegetable ivory isn't actually ivory, it's a hard, ivory-colored nut. More commonly called the tagua nut, it's a sustainable alternative to traditional ivory. For more information, please see the product story on the left.

Unique item, but would love something similar made locally.

I checked "seen this elsewhere" and I don't mean that literally--I just feel like this is a common look. I actually appreciate items handmade no matter where they are from, and I think it has a great story. I just think the look is not unique enough to merit the cost.

I love the item and Batik work is always amazing but it is too expensive.

Amy

It would be helpful to know just how big in diameter the largest beads might be, in order for people to have clear expectations. Even though I love bulky jewelry, REALLY large beads can be surprisingly cumbersome.
