steps rugby Vaishali Patel
- the story
Step by Step
This geometric rug from designer Vaishali Patel weaves together elements of the modern and the ancient, the practical and the transcendent. Working in Brooklyn, Patel draws upon the culture of India—from its architecture, to its language, to traditional board games—and incorporates them into her designs. Her rugs are then brought to life by skilled artisans in India, using techniques passed down for generations, including traditional floor looms.
This rectangular rug was inspired by the architecture of India's stepwells—a watering place where a central pool is reached by intricately-designed descending stairs on all sides. The bands of horizontal color become darker toward the middle to create a sense of depth. The rug is woven from 100% natural cotton and colored with vibrant, natural dyes. With each detail woven perfectly into the whole, it's a functional accent and an enlightened work of art. Handmade in India.

- Use of a rug pad is highly recommended. Spot clean immediately when necessary. If liquid is spilled on your rug, blot with clean, un-dyed cotton cloth by pressing firmly around the spill to absorb as much as possible. Mild soap water can be used. Do not scrub. Professional rug cleaning is recommended. Vacuum regularly to prevent dust and crumbs from settling into roots of the fibers. Avoid direct and continuous exposure to sunlight. Use rug protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to avoid flattening. Do not pull loose ends; clip them with scissors to remove. Turn rug around occasionally to equalize wear. Store your rug by rolling it or folding it and wrap in cloth or plastic for protection. Do not store in an airtight plastic bag. Place in a dry, well-ventilated area. This product may transfer color to nylon or silk material when wet.
- the maker
Designer, Architect and Artist Vaishali first founded her company in 2010. As a lifelong designer, she understood that authentic contemporary Indian designs are a complex synthesis of traditional motifs and modern sensibilities. Each unique rug collection is concept driven and inspired by a vivid childhood memory of the designer; a traditional board game, the subterranean beauty of Stepwell architecture or symbols from ancient Indian scriptures. These personal design memories also leverage traditional weaving techniques allowing the textures and materials to be part of the design narrative.
