Malcolm and Mary Ann Owen
Artists Malcolm and Mary Ann Owen own a small metalworking studio located in the northern foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in New York State, not far from the Canadian border. They have owned and operated the studio since 1976.
The Owens work with copper, brass, gold and sterling silver, creating clocks and other small household objects. Most works are a collaborative effort, with Mary Ann creating the theme and layout of the pieces and Malcolm working on the mechanical aspects of production. Both partners also independently create one-of-a-kind works: Mary Ann makes jewelry and small-scale sculptures, and Malcolm makes large sculptural and decorative work.
As a child, Mary Ann was always interested in a variety of crafts. After being introduced to a wide range of metalworking techniques in college, she concentrated on jewelry making. The small figures seen throughout her work create a special intimacy with the viewer and a metaphor about people and time.
Malcolm has always had a strong bond with tools, both to use and to make. As a self-taught blacksmith he made many of the hammers and stakes still used in the studio today. His training in philosophy combined with his love of tools resonates in his work.
Their artwork is unique and insightful in their design and craftsmanship. Each piece is entirely handmade from start to finish by the artists. The variations in patina and figure placement are considered desirable and normal thus marking each piece as truly handcrafted.
