Everyday tools get an artful spin in Christopher Stiles' sculptural salt and pepper shakers, handmade from twice-fired porcelain and natural cork stoppers in California. "Their tops are an element of the table, of food, and ultimately, of us," says Stiles of the design inspiration behind these twirling pieces that roll, wobble and spin to mimic the ritual and dynamics of meal time. Drawing from the simplicity of organic forms, Stiles interprets natural materials in an effort to bring us closer to nature--and by doing so, bringing us closer to ourselves.

Christopher Stiles

While studying abroad in England in his youth, Christopher Stiles noticed an art gallery selling hand-blown glass in the window. The experience compelled him to seek new ways to express his ideas through hand-formed objects.

Upon returning to the U.S., Stiles earned a Bachelor's degree in fine art, with a focus in ceramics from California State University, Long Beach. After graduation, he apprenticed with a master mold maker to further hone his skills. See all creations.
