Marty Kubicki

Originally hailing from Chicago, Marty Kubicki moved to California in 1977, and moved into a home across the street from some local ceramic artists. He befriended his neighbors, who soon coaxed him into leaving his electronics career behind, and into joining their budding enterprise making ceramic jewelry. He started learning about clay, and became hooked by this fascinating and flexible medium. He yearned for more, and soon decided to venture out on his own. With his partner at the time, they started designing their own line of decorative accessories. Completely self taught, and with no formal training, he experimented with different types of clay and forms. In 1983, he was shown his first antique lithophane by a collector. He was absolutely captivated by the intricate detail that these delicate carvings produced when they were lit from behind. It seemed amazing and puzzling that such a beautiful art form had simply disappeared! He dedicated himself to discovering the secrets of creating lithophanes. collection
