Weapon of Mirth Distraction

Is it a paperweight? A work of art? Yes, but at its heart, this curious metal object is actually a groan-inducing, visual joke. Using recycled steel parts, artist Fred Conlon combines a heavyweight screw with a metal ball, suggesting a suitable name for someone with a wacky sense of humor. Perfect for any office pun-slinger, it sits on the desk, innocently inviting passers-by to ask: "What is that thing, anyway?" Handmade in Utah.

“I create stuff that brings a smile to people's faces...and I think good art should make you smile.”

What would metalsmith Fred Conlon be if he weren't an artist? "I can't imagine doing anything else," he says. Raised in Colorado, Fred now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he makes witty garden sculptures out of reclaimed metal.

        Comments about Screwball Paperweight:

This got placed front and center in my office to be used as a paperweight for all that annoying incoming snail mail. Admin and mail folks didn't get the hint, so I placed a small "MAIL" label on it until they caught on. Then the fun began as folks tried to figure out what it was. Unique and a good laugh. I'm trying to work up the nerve to buy the same artist's '*-bomb' work to see what office chatter that might create.
