Fire & Ice

These votive candleholders capture the welcoming warmth of a flickering hearth when the world outside is frozen in winter. But rather than being formed from ice, the translucent base is created by heat which fuses layer upon layer of reclaimed windowpane glass. As elegant, sculptural accents, the pair of candleholders brings a touch of soothing warmth to your decor, whether or not the candles are lit.

The solid heft of the pieces conveys the quality and craftsmanship that goes into their making. They come from the OATKA Glass Studio, located in a 19th century warehouse in the former industrial belt of upstate New York. In the language of the indigenous Seneca nation, "oatka" means "through the opening"--both the name of a local creek and an appropriate title for a studio that prides itself for working with reclaimed window glass which is rescued from becoming landfill waste. The iron oxide impurities in old glass give the bowl an ethereal, glacial green color, and the layered, uneven edges of the raw glass create a compelling, visual depth and a mottled texture that welcomes tactile exploration. Handmade in Batavia, NY.
