Tent Transformer

A tent that provides shelter in the wilderness transforms into a remarkable rug. Patricia Lukas puts a new twist on her custom, designer rag rugs while giving new life to nylon tents. The entire nylon tent - zippers and all - is woven into an incredibly sturdy rug. The nylon fabric and linen warp combine to celebrate the architecture of the original tent as well as the imperfections of its deconstruction. Perfect for spaces where you want woodsy, utilitarian colors and textures. Handmade in Tewksbury Township, New Jersey.

For as long as she can remember, Patricia has been intrigued by the art of weaving. Her first introduction to multi-harness looms was on a childhood visit to Sturbridge Village, a re-creation of an 18th century town in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. She recalls being in the weaving house and watching a woman weave fabric at a loom that was almost as large as the room itself. That memory stayed with her, and during a trip to New Hampshire with her family some years later, her parents bought her a four harness, 15" wide table loom.

A magazine article about rag rugs shown to her by her mother sparked her interest and soon she began weaving her own rugs. Patricia's rugs began to catch the attention of interior designers, as well as home furnishing shops, and soon her business was transformed to the production of custom rag rugs.

After four years at the farm, Patricia moved her business to a studio above the garage at her home in Clinton, CT. A job promotion for her husband Tom, brought them to their current location in Tewksbury Township, NJ, where Patricia weaves in a former horse barn on their property, which was converted to a studio by Tom. It is in this idyllic setting, surrounded by gardens, a small fish pond, nesting bluebirds and roaming deer, from which Patricia draws inspiration to create rugs which complement every style of home design.

Comments about UncommonGoods Recycled Tent Rag Rug:

I am a weaver and was curious to see how the artist managed to combine ecofriendly practices with the art of weaving. I am joyfully posting that she has! I have been using the rug for more than two months and it still looks as good as when I first laid it down. Not easy since I live in NH and have three dogs!
