- the maker
In July 2007, designer Laura Skelton began turning unwanted, thrift-store clothing into creative accessories. With a background in architecture, Laura creates products that are clean, simple and minimalist; bold without going over the top.
Laura is committed to using sustainable materials and practices whenever possible. Raw materials found in thrift stores and the backs of closets, with their funky patterns and unique histories, are the inspiration behind many of her creations. These components are integrated into the design in such a way that closer inspection of the patterns and textures is needed to realize what they used to be. The recycled materials Laura uses are inexpensive, abundant and have a character that only comes with having a previous life. Even when used in the same design over and over, because of the inherent singularity of the material the results are not cookie-cutter copies of one another.
Before starting her own business, Laura worked for Stanley Tigerman doing sustainable architecture in Chicago. She graduated from Columbia University in 2006 with a major in Architecture. During her studies at Columbia in 2005, Laura did a design internship with Peter Eisenman Architects. She loves to design and make things, and is especially interested in making lovely things out of recycled and sustainable materials. Laura now lives in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans.
