Refreshing Remnants

Kathleen Plate's smooth, geometric cuts of translucent glass possess rich jewel-toned hues symbolizing the 12 months. A contemporary answer to the classic birthstone, each bold piece provides a subtle nod to your birth month by adding a dramatic splash of color to your décolletage.

"I want my work to inspire people to see the things we take for granted differently, to be catalysts for conversations with strangers about how their jewelry is actually made from recycled bottles," says the English Ph.D.-turned-jeweler. Handmade of recycled glass and sterling silver in Georgia.

Exclusively at UncommonGoods.

Kathleen Plate

Kathleen Plate's elegant and contemporary recycled glass jewelry has a bit of family history. Plate grew up in Washington and observed the art of cutting and soldering glass by her crafty mother. She still brings those skills to her pieces today.

During the mid 1990s she began making and selling jewelry in her spare time. She did so well that she decided to take her Smart Glass work national, even though it meant putting off her graduate work in American Literature.

Smart Glass pieces are all handmade from bright and bold stained glass, silver solder and sterling silver. Plate believes in simplicity and respect for the earth and the human spirit. All her designs use recycled material, while portions of the proceeds from others will go to support many of Kathleen's favorite non-profit organizations. collection

We're always excited to see new designs from artist Kathleen Plate. Her latest pieces are inspired by birthstones, but with no mining required! She uses colorful reclaimed glass to capture the hues symbolizing the 12 months. What do you love about this uncommon design?

      Malorie

It would be nice to see the other colors.

Gorgeous and USA made. I would wear it.

It's like a lot of things you already carry.

Not pretty. Would anyone wear this? There are better birthstone item out there, some in your catalog.

I've tried glass bottle jewelry and it looks great with a white background, but against skin or a dark fabric it just fades away - too bad!

I like the modern look of this necklace and would definitely wear it if received as a gift, not sure if I would purchase it for myself. There is the added bonus of it being handmade in the USA from recycle glass though!

It doesn't strike me as a birthstone type item. You'd have to explain it

OK, I'll buy this one as an acceptable gift, but, again, it's just too ordinary, not extraordinary. Why compromise?

      Patricia

These are pretty but, they look so cheaply made.
