Salvage-Yard Centerpiece

An industrial work of art, this reclaimed tool bowl features discarded screwdrivers, hammers, wrenches and whatever else artist Tammy Roy can get her hands on.

The discarded pieces are collected by the artist herself from various steel manufacturers before she arranges them and then welds them all together.

"I am literally inside of their dumpsters picking through and separating pieces that inspire me," Tammy says. "I never know what I'm going to come across, and as a result, I never know what it will ultimately transform into."

Perfectly pieced together, this salvage-yard centerpiece proves that beauty and inspiration can be found in the most surprising of places. Handmade in Wisconsin.

Tammy Roy

Tammy Roy hails from Stratford, Wisconsin, a town of 1,523 people. "My parents were, and still are, workaholics who owned several small businesses including a repair shop, school bus company, gas station, car wash and the list goes on," Tammy says. "Needless to say, my brother and I were forced into slave labor at a very young age and worked in the family businesses."

Tammy has a background in graphic design, but has always been interested in creating things out of metal, especially reclaimed metal. Tammy says it stems from her mom's "hobby" of rummaging through industrial dumpsters and scrap yards for interesting pieces.

"I've learned a lot from my mom, who is the ultimate dumpster diver and also a recycle-based artist," Tammy says. "And unlike most mothers and daughters, you won't see us in the malls, but instead pulling scraps of steel from salvage yards"

After a few welding lessons from her dad, Tammy started her own line of bowls and home accessories made from recycled materials.

"My favorite finds come from mountains of twisted and mangled steel at the local scrap yard. I never know what I'm going to come across, and as a result, I never know what it will ultimately transform into. But the process is completely intoxicating and I can't imagine doing anything else."
