Wright For the Birds

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed in concert with Nature (with a capital N, he insisted), and this Wright-inspired birdfeeder follows his lead. Made of durable, stained cedar with side panels sporting an art glass pattern from Wright's Darwin D. Martin house, it will bring notes of sublime design to feeding your feathered friends. The Prairie-style, cantilevered roof is removable to refill the feeder with ease (holds about five cups of seed), while it provides shelter for your hungry, perching guests. Handmade by Drew Kelley in Buffalo, New York (home of the Martin House).

Made in New York

Drew Kelley is an Industrial Designer who, for 30+ years, has invented, designed, and developed a wide range of products for the home and workplace. He thrives on the challenges of developing new products and the decision-making involved in getting a design through the manufacturing process in a pragmatic fashion. With the Darwin D. Martin House Bird Feeder, Drew wanted to create a product that was not designed to be mass-produced in a faraway land. Instead, he designed a handmade product using domestic vendors to supply key components. He collaborated with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to design a unique bird feeder that pays homage to Wright in its styling. The “Art Glass” window presented in the feeder is based on a 1903 sketch by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo, NY.

Big Frank Lloyd Wright fan and this feeder just looks great! Have had lots of positive feedback from friends who have visited. My feeder has had visits from cardinals, chickadees and goldfinches to name a few.

This feeder is wonderful! Attractive, functional, easy to fill, and the songbirds seem to love it. It looks wonderful off my deck and I can watch the birds all day...

Beautiful but totally non-functional bird feeder

        • Does Not Work At All

        Best Uses

Comments about UncommonGoods Prairie Bird Feeder:

While this feeder is gorgeous, it doesn't work at all. The bird seed spills out the bottom the second you pour it in. Despite what they say, it doesn't hold 5 cups of seed; if you can get the seed to stay inside, it *might* hold 2 cups. But I couldn't get the seed to stay in no matter what. It doesn't even have a trough at the bottom to retain some seed. I've not seen one bird eat from it.

I posted a question on the site on 5/4/2015 and it took 3 weeks for Jeffrey with Customer Service to respond and this was the response I got from him. I don't believe they ever actually tried putting seed in this feeder since the response I got from Jeffrey started off saying "We believe if the bottom feed chute is blocked...." Also, he linked to a PDF with more info, but it was located on his computer (not on the web) so I couldn't access it. He never responded to my follow up email sent on 5/29/2015.

"Thanks for the question. We believe if the bottom feed chute is blocked as indicated in the attached picture the feeder will fill up with about 5 cups of seed and the side ports will backfill and seed will be waiting for birds to poke their beaks in to feed. Please check this link as well to see what we mean.
          file:///C:/Users/jeffreym/Downloads/Feeder%20filling%20(1).pdf"

Here was my response on 5/29:
"Hi Jeffrey, the link that you included in your response below goes to a PDF that is located on your hard drive, not on the web. I can't access that document. Can you please send a link online with the PDF? If not, may I just say that I tried blocking the chute but the area where the feed spills out on the bottom can't really be blocked effectively. Even when I unblocked it, the feed went pouring out both sides because the bottom of the feeder is flat instead of having a trough to catch some of the feed. This was a gift from my best friend and it's a beautiful feeder, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Can I return it or exchange it for something else? I have the packing slip with the return address label."

          Service and delivery comments:

Product arrived in great condition. Too bad the feeder is a bad design.

Comments about UncommonGoods Prairie Bird Feeder:

I was very impressed with the product's construction and materials. Very nice and substantial cedar wood, with a light stain (which allowed us to stain over it with a complimentary color). The glass panels appear to be more durable that I had anticipated. Overall, a great design and execution!

Feeder has received lots of positive comments on the FLW design windows. Birds are happy with many repeat customers...very demanding though.

Comments about UncommonGoods Prairie Bird Feeder:

It's hanging on a tree in my garden that also has several other, more ordinary bird feeders. I very rarely see the birds - or even the squirrels - go to this feeder.
