Grown Together
San Francisco-based artist Vanessa Gade turns the interplay of pendant and chain into a dynamic sculptural statement. Inspired by her city's inherent dualism, marked by powerful its feats of engineering (like the Golden Gate Bridge) and it's peaceful Southern Californian shorelines, Vanessa captures this rich and varied landscape in the motion and tension of her bold, kinetic pieces.
While in most necklaces, pendant and chain function independently, in Vanessa's jewelry, both pieces are integral to the form, function, and visual impact of the finished piece.
In this particular necklace, an organic form evoking a tender petal or droplet is articulated in 14K rose gold vermeil and sterling silver and interlaced with a crisscrossed 14K gold-filled chain that glides fluidly with the wearer's movement. The unique relationship between the different parts of Vanessa's piece emphasizes their dependency on each other in a romantic and beautiful way, evoking our deep connection and reliance on those who support us. Handmade in San Francisco, California.

It was Vanessa's passion for history and photography that initiated her path to jewelry design. While studying to become a historian at the University of California, San Diego she volunteered to help construct the new darkroom on campus, directly adjacent to the metalsmithing studio. Fascinated by the tools, stone, and molten metal, she wandered inside and never looked back. See all creations.

We love that the chain is such an important part of the design of this handmade necklace. What's your favorite thing about this uncommon piece?

It's very unique yet beautifully simple. I would worry about the price though.

I love this necklace. It is pretty and unique. Would look great with a flowy summer dress.

I like the shape, but not crazy about seeing the chain in the center. I think if the chain was covered by maybe some sort of tubing (metal or plastic) that matches the whole thing it would look nicer.

It does not appeal to me. I go for more romantic soft styles but the 1st thing I noticed was that chain. I really dislike it. I think you could set it off more with a more detailed chain.

Very pretty and unique! I would think a must-have for any friend who lives in San Fran - great symbolism behind it. Just looking at it, I'm not *wild* about the big X the chain makes - it would be very helpful to see the necklace on a model.

Not interesting. Doesn't say "petal" to me. Looks more like a railroad crossing teardrop.

I'm on the fence. I like the artistic design, but maybe a gem or bead in the center would be more appealing.

I've never seen this design. it's eyecatching

I love the simplicity of it!! It can be worn with anything by anyone.Very nice piece.

Depending on how easily the chain slides through those holes, this looks like something that could get tilted to one side or another too much as the chain moves around during the day. It also just doesn't appeal to me - it seems unfinished.

I LIKE IT. IT'S JUST DIFFERENT.

I like the design but would like to see how big the pendant is in relation to my neck. I would also like to see it with a longer chain.

I think I would like this better if the chain were not in the middle

I like the shape of the metal piece but the chain is too coarse. I feel like the chain should be more delicate.

While the petal shape is beautiful, I don't like that the chain is crossed and then lies across the bottom of the pendent. I feel as this would weaken the chain significantly the more it is worn.

Elegant, but not really my style. I might buy it for a gift, however.

I get the dualism/contrast idea, but am not into the sleek petal and "rugged" chain... As others mentioned, the X is a bit off-putting. I like how the description mentions engineering/shorelines as well as our fluid and binding relationships -- I just don't see those ideas represented here.

The chain criss-crossing in the center is distracting and seems cluttered. I'd like it much better if it slipped through the top of the necklace cleanly. Also, it looks like a teardrop, not a petal.

It kind of reminds me of shackles. Not very appealing.

While the necklace is nice, it is not something that would stand out to me. Also, being in gold, I would imagine the price may not be in the range that I was looking for.

Simple and beautiful. I think that the chain going through the middle makes it interesting.

Love how the elements of the chain and the pendent join together, it would look good with a mixture of metals or maybe different designs from the threaded chain.

i like the look of this but i wish it came in white gold as well

I agree with Erika, i don't like to see the chain thru it. And i don't like the chain either.

The interdependence between the necklace and the chain is truly breathtaking. I love the idea of the chain moving through the teardrop patter as the wearer moves about their day. It draws the wearers attention to the interconnectedness that surrounds us all on a daily basis in a beautifully crated way.

When you need to know the backstory to "get" the work, it's just not worth it.

A nice idea but the execution just isn't appealing. Maybe in a different combination of shapes.

I really want to like it because I like the concept. The execution leaves something to be desired. The chain looks cheap and a worry that it would move around all the time and get tangled.
Carolyn

The chain is too coarse. The elegance of the petal form becomes leaden with that chain. Otherwise, it has potential.

Love the teardrop shape, but hate the chain crossing through the middle. I would be forever adjusting it.
Jeanine
Love this.

I think all the explanations are a bunch of hooey, but I like the looks of the piece. Thumbs up.
