“I think funny and pretty don't have to be mutually exclusive.”
"I think funny and pretty don't have to be mutually exclusive," says designer Emily McDowell. "I find it creepily satisfying whenever a customer asks if we've been reading her diary, because it means we're doing something right." When she first launched her collection of greeting cards and prints, it was actually just Emily drawing stuff in her bedroom. Today, she has a busy team based between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and their products now include textiles, mugs, stationery, and whatever else they can figure out how to make while retaining some semblance of sanity. Emily and company try to identify universal, emotional truths and observations on being human—designs about the relationships we actually have, not the ones we wish we had.
