Batter Up
In his quest to create the perfect plate for devouring pancakes, designer Jon Wye broke down the elements of what makes a pillowy stack so comforting. After a lifelong love affair with breakfast, Wye pin-pointed the crux of satisfaction: syrup. Designed with a raised edge that gently slopes the plate toward the diner and an ingenious reservoir for pooling loose syrup, this plate was made for slicing, dipping and delighting in each bite of pancake goodness. But the best part? This plate enhances any saucy dish down to the last drop. Made in Arizona. Sold as a set of 2 plates.
Exclusively at UncommonGoods.
- Item ID: 30355
- Materials: stoneware
- 11.25" dia.
- Microwave and dishwasher safe.
Please note that due to a manufacturing change, pancake plates have a slightly smaller diameter than plates purchased prior 10/22/12.
Jon Wye
Designer Jon Wye is quick to point out that his background is not in art. Sure he's always been creative--as a child, he used to make his own versions of the devices illustrated in The Way Things Work--but it wasn't until he was an adult that, on a whim, he started creating handmade pewter belt buckles and got hooked. He collaborates with a collective of artists and designers, but still likes to approach projects with an unusual, problem-solving perspective.
Case in point: pancakes. Wye is something of a diehard, pancake aficionado. Once, after a bad breakup, he ate made-from-scratch pancakes at least once a day for six months. Over time he perfected his own recipe, and discovered a way to keep them from becoming a syrupy mess by developing a sloped-surface plate. See

Interesting. Is this $25 per plate?
Cassie, UncommonGoods Community Moderator
Thanks for the question! The estimated cost is per plate. Would you prefer the plain plate or the plate featuring Jon Wye's original artwork? We can't wait to hear what the community has to say about this delightful dish!

I wore the t-shirt with logo last night and 4 hot women stopped me to comment. You can't get better than that. And I am 66 years old.

PLEASE keep the pirate pancake logo! I wear the shirt all the time and I've never not gotten a compliment or been asked more about it. It would be a tragic mistake to take something awesome and make it boring. With the logo: I'm buying a set for every wedding

I prefer the plain plate. A design might be nice, but I'm not a fan of the Pirate Chef artwork.

Love the logo, but other than kids, who doesn't already know how eat pancakes off a regular plate at home?

We make our own maple syurp from trees on our property and I never want to waste a drop! These plates are awesome! I like the plain best.

Really? $25 for a plate to eat specific foods off of? I don't think so.

WAY too expensive for 1 plate! Who eats pancakes by themselves? I don't care for the artwork either.

Unless you are a real lover of pancakes, it seems silly to have plates just for one food item. BUT you should ask IHOP if they want to buy some to offer to cunstomers.

This is absolutely genius! Everyone searches for syrup to dip their specific pieces of pancake in and this allows a dipping area while also no making your pancakes soggy.
Elena
I would totally buy this plate, but for that price you should get at least two. It doesn't matter if you actually eat pancakes on it or not. You could use it for all kinds of saucy foods, but just because it's slanted doesn't mean you can't use it for anything.
kat
I love the logo. The plate - well, a little pricey.
brit
love the idea, but it's a little pricey.

Thank you all so much for the fantastic feedback we received on this item! We do plan to add the plate to our assortment, but we're still working out some details--so it is not yet available for purchase. After tallying the votes and weighing your comments, our buyers have decided to go ahead with the plate without the logo. Based on your feedback, we found that a plain plate would appeal to a wider selection of pancake (and other saucy food) lovers. Also, we are working to keep the price as close to the estimated price as possible, and printing the logo would inevitably raise the price beyond the $25 mark. Thanks again for voting and sharing your opinions on this uncommon good. Voters like you are helping us make great new products like this plate star items in our assortment!
Jennifer
This is amazing. I love pancakes. But even as a pancake lover I wouldn't pay $25 for one plate.
Damian
Love this plate...let me know when they're available, as mentioned, 25.00 per plate is steep. Much as I like it, don't think I could responsibly pay that per plate.
