Lori Strickland

A native Floridian, Lori Strickland comes from a long line of ranchers and cowboys-"Old Florida," she calls it. "Before the mouse took over." Lori trained at the Gemology Institute of America and The Jeweler's Bench of Florida. While she was studying to become a designer, she met her husband, who was studying to become a manufacturer.

"We have the perfect relationship in many ways," Lori says. "Every designer needs a manufacturer and every manufacturer needs a designer."

The Stricklands have worked together for 15 years and have a 10-year-old daughter, who has designed jewelry and made wax models since she was six. She's even designing something to be featured in Lori's next collection. "We are a true family business," she says.

"My inspiration comes from the world around me. I tend to see things from a different angle than most people. I enjoy the irony and romance of life. Plain objects seem whimsical and I see things like the cork in the dog or flowers and plants that dance like ballerinas."

When she isn't busy with jewelry, Lori is taking her daughter to voice lessons or barefoot skiing when the weather is nice. The family also enjoys walking on the beach, surf fishing and playing with their two dachshunds.

Something about this item made me think that it was a thermometer... until I read the title. Maybe if I liked martinis....?

Donna
Vote: Thumbs up!

I love it. It's swanky and mod and definitely unique.

Nicole
Vote: Thumbs down!

It looks like a robotic eye being stabbed by a pen. Can anyone say "Terminator 2"?

KAREN
Vote: Thumbs up!

does this come with the pen? otherwise it is priced a little too high, cute item though.

Suzanne
Vote: Thumbs down!

I actually didn't get the joke until reading the description. A bit too clever.

Dawn
Vote: Thumbs down!

Would never use it

Deborah
Vote: Thumbs down!

It doesn't even look like an olive...

Mallory
Vote: Thumbs down!

I think the look of the "olive" could be better. I think it's kinda ugly.

Nancy
Vote: Thumbs down!

Where's the green?

ASHLEY
Vote: Thumbs down!

Did not get the martini connection until after I read the description. It's just ... weird. And not weird in the way I usually love.

Shelley
Vote: Thumbs down!

$65 for a paperweight. Oh, and a penholder. Do people need such a pricey tool to keep track of their writing implements? Clever, but not enough.

Tara
Vote: Thumbs down!

I think people will only get that this is an olive if the rest of the room was martini/cocktail themed. If the ball was green instead of silver it would make more sense, and maybe if the pen looked a bit more like a swizzle stick.

kathryn
Vote: Thumbs down!

Seems expensive for pewter and glass.

MELISSA
Vote: Thumbs down!

like the idea but not the execution. something about the red "olive pit" looks odd/ out-of-place since the rest of the piece - including the body of the "olive" is silver. perhaps it would work better with some hint of green OR with the entire kept silver?

Melissa
Vote: Thumbs down!

Hard to reconize it as martini olive. Just seems a bit odd.

Sharon
Vote: Thumbs down!

Does not look like an olive -- would need to be green. I agree with the comment that it looks like a stabbed eyeball!

Heather
Vote: Thumbs down!

I don't see olive, I see bloody eyeball.

jodi
Vote: Thumbs down!

liked the last penholder much better

Luann
Vote: Thumbs down!

Martini??? Olive???? don't think so.

Dixie
Vote: Thumbs down!

I don't get it, but maybe because I'm not a drinker. Wouldn't buy it, for sure.

Elizabeth
Vote: Thumbs down!

i dont think it looks like an olive..

Lauren E.
Vote: Thumbs down!

design is weird

Sharon
Vote: Thumbs down!

olive should be green... just looks like a pewter ball.

Suzi
Vote: Thumbs down!

Silly, but not in a clever way

Cianna
Vote: Thumbs down!

I don't like it. It strikes me as being a pierced red eyeball and overpriced.

Jessica
Vote: Thumbs down!

I like martinis, but this is just weird.

Darcy
Vote: Thumbs down!

I agree with people who didn't know what it was at first ... kind of creepy at first glance, but the price is too high even if I knew what I was looking at.

Amanda
Vote: Thumbs down!

doesnt look like an olive

Jessica
Vote: Thumbs down!

Expensive for a gag gift.

Deena
Vote: Thumbs down!

Agreed it doesn't look like an olive.

Lynn
Vote: Thumbs down!

why

Emily
Vote: Thumbs down!

I agree with the comment about the robot eye. My husband drinks dirty martinis and I know if I got this for him he would not get the olive reference. And what does a martini olive have to do with a pen?

Aimee Dars
Vote: Thumbs down!

Weird angle for a pen holder.

Anita
Vote: Thumbs up!

Great for the martini drinkers!

Kathleen
Vote: Thumbs down!

Who uses stuff like this?

Elizabeth
Vote: Thumbs up!

Cute if it comes with the pen...

thomas
Vote: Thumbs down!

Not cool--alcohol has destroyed too many lives. Don't glorify it!

Shelly
Vote: Thumbs down!

Cute idea. Way too expensive for a novelty.

jennifer
Vote: Thumbs down!

this looks like an eyeball...

anna
Vote: Thumbs down!

the name does not represent the item. Should be green if its a martini olive.

Julie
Vote: Thumbs down!

Would never have known by looking that it was supposed to be an olive and it's too pricey.

Kendra
Vote: Thumbs down!

I like that its modern but I'm just not sure what to think of it.

erin
Vote: Thumbs down!

I had no idea what it was and all I can picture is having to answer the question, "What the HELL is that?" fifty times a day.

Melodi
Vote: Thumbs down!

Who uses paperweights?

Vonette
Vote: Thumbs down!

dont get it

Kimberly
Vote: Thumbs down!

Looks kind of odd.

Fran
Vote: Thumbs down!

Tacky, over-priced dust collector. besides, since when are olives silver. Did not get the concept.

Margaret
Vote: Thumbs down!

strange

Keisha
Vote: Thumbs down!

It looks like an eyeball. Maybe the olive should have been green.

judy
Vote: Thumbs down!

This just doesn't work visually.

Judith
Vote: Thumbs down!

This is for someone I sure don't know!

Jody
Vote: Thumbs up!

Death Star, olive, or robot eye, it's cute -- if it comes with the pen.

mindy
Vote: Thumbs down!

it looks bad - if it were green it would look like an olive, but this looks like a modern art version of a body party.

Janet
Vote: Thumbs down!

Just weird looking

Gina
Vote: Thumbs down!

Can't tell what it is...looks alien or something.

Andrea
Vote: Thumbs down!

Again this pen holder only holds one pen and is a little pricey.

Melissa
Vote: Thumbs down!

Doesn't look like an olive to me. More like a robotic eye or something.

Bethany
Vote: Thumbs down!

Stabbed eyeball; expensive one at that!

Marilyn
Vote: Thumbs down!

Needs too much explanation.

bonnie
Vote: Thumbs down!

just misses

Elisa
Vote: Thumbs down!

it's witty in theory, but it just looks too much like a stabbed eyeball to me.

Amy
Vote: Thumbs down!

Olive? Maybe if it were green.

Daniel
Vote: Thumbs down!

Expensive desk clutter for one pen. Who would know it is an olive?

Irene

Thumbs down! Just an expensive dust catcher for your desktop!

Karin
Vote: Thumbs up!

Fun gift idea.

Jamie
Vote: Thumbs up!

Cool! Very innovative!

Amanda
Vote: Thumbs down!

It doesn't look like an olive to me

Cindy
Vote: Thumbs down!

If you can't tell what it is without an explanation, perhaps needs to be re-thought, re-designed.

Louise
Vote: Thumbs down!

What olive? Too expensive for something not useful or attractive.

Eileen
Vote: Thumbs down!

Does anybody really need an olive penholder?

Laura
Vote: Thumbs down!

cost too much

Regina
Vote: Thumbs down!

I find this to be ugly and couldn't tell what it was.

Rachelle
Vote: Thumbs down!

Looks like a big robot eyeball instead of an olive.

Judith L
Vote: Thumbs down!

Nicely made, but will attract a very small market.

claire
Vote: Thumbs down!

Love martinis but that looks like a giant, red eyeball more than an olive.

Jennifer
Vote: Thumbs up!

seems a little expensive

Kelleigh
Vote: Thumbs down!

it's a little odd looking.

Linda
Vote: Thumbs down!

I wouldn't have known this was supposed to be an olive without the description.

Vote: Thumbs down!

Can't tell what it is.

Elizabeth
Vote: Thumbs up!

but too expensive

Becca
Vote: Thumbs down!

Can't really tell it's an olive because the base is silver.

Kathleen
Vote: Thumbs down!

If an item has to be explained, I never would have known it is supposed to be a martini olive. I would never buy it or want it.

Mary
Vote: Thumbs up!

useful art!

angela

not for the price

Maria
Vote: Thumbs down!

really don't see the point of this.

Eileen
Vote: Thumbs down!

Too off balance-would like to see the pen moved a few degrees to it's left. Even so, Not anything I'd buy. This belongs in a MoMa store.

Sara
Vote: Thumbs down!

Couldn't tell WHAT this was...and I drink martinis!

Wendy
Vote: Thumbs down!

Is that really supposed to be an olive??

Gina
Vote: Thumbs down!

i am sorry, but his looks more like a boob than an olive.

Linda
Vote: Thumbs down!

Doesn't look like an olive, it confuses me.

jen
Vote: Thumbs up!

too expensive

malinda
Vote: Thumbs down!

Tough call for me, at first I was thumbs up but then I had to go thumbs down. I think its just weird to call this a martini when all it is an olive and an olive in silver and red is weird. Great shape to hold the pen though.

Heather
Vote: Thumbs down!

WAY too overpriced for a pen holder.

Sharon
Vote: Thumbs down!

It's a very attractive, but rather silly object.

April
Vote: Thumbs up!

Too expensive

April
Vote: Thumbs up!

I love this because I collect pens, but it is too high.

Leah
Vote: Thumbs down!

it looks like an eyeball

sam
Vote: Thumbs down!

You'd never guess it was supposed to be an olive....which is the only possible way you'd be able to get $65 for it

Xena
Vote: Thumbs down!

Center should be green. Not immediately recognizable as an olive. Should come with the pen.

Jill
Vote: Thumbs down!

An olive?

Michael
Vote: Thumbs down!

my martini's, or those of my friends, don't come with silver/pewter colored olives. price point is high for a stabbed eyeball.

Kathy
Vote: Thumbs up!

cute but too expensive

Katie
Vote: Thumbs down!

Just too bold. I agree with the robot eye getting stabbed.

Allison
Vote: Thumbs down!

Doesn't look like an olive!!

Liz
Vote: Thumbs down!

it doesn't look like an olive AT ALL - more like an eyeball

Lori
Vote: Thumbs down!

Like the idea as an executive desk item but wouldn't have known what it was supposed to be without reading the description.

hannah
Vote: Thumbs down!

Great idea just expensive for a pen holder

Lesley

I'm on the fence with this one

Gina
Vote: Thumbs down!

It just doesn't look like an olive.

ADA
Vote: Thumbs down!

maybe if it were more oval than sphere, like a real olive... also too expensive

Dorothy
Vote: Thumbs down!

I actually have a collection of olive sculptures and I didn't see this as an olive until I read the description. In my book, that's a fail.

Homei
Vote: Thumbs down!

didnt get this until reading the description

Colleen

paperweights aren't really my thing, but I could see it being a neat gift.

michelle
Vote: Thumbs down!

cute but too pricey

gail
Vote: Thumbs up!

interesting

Kayla
Vote: Thumbs down!

I wouldn't buy this.

Andrea Gray
Vote: Thumbs up!

Simple and visually interesting. I think you should also offer this in a green option so it looks like an olive (although the silver is more abstract, and therefore more intriguing). Lower the price and you have a winner, especially for co-worker gift giving around the holidays. I hope for this price, it comes with the pen...

Deborah
Vote: Thumbs down!

Should be green!

Hallie
Vote: Thumbs down!

It looks more like a circle with an orb through it versus an olive?

Karen E.
Vote: Thumbs down!

STUPID STUPID STUPID

Jackie
Vote: Thumbs down!

Would be more likable if the olive portion was green to resemble a real olive.

Sherri
Vote: Thumbs down!

Don't think it looks enough like an olive.

Tina
Vote: Thumbs down!

Maybe if the glass were green, it would be better. I thought this was more of something of a sci-fi/robot nature than an olive on a toothpick.

Delyn
Vote: Thumbs down!

Didn't know what it was till I read the description. I have a friend that loves martinis but would not pay this much for it.

Jaye
Vote: Thumbs down!

Might work if the olive were green.

Sarah
Vote: Thumbs down!

Could be so much better.

Jennifer
Vote: Thumbs up!

It's cute, but maybe a little too expensive for something that holds one pen.

Johanna
Vote: Thumbs down!

Ungly

Oksana
Vote: Thumbs down!

that does not look like an olive

Jenny
Vote: Thumbs down!

I couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be.

Angie

Would be better if "olive" was green - I wouldnt have known what it was if the title didn't spell it out.

Heidi
Vote: Thumbs down!

It's pretty ugly too. Doesn't look like an olive.

Whitney
Vote: Thumbs down!

Very creative idea and the olive is identifiable however, very expensive for one pen.

Sharon
Vote: Thumbs down!

It just looks wrong...

KAREN
Vote: Thumbs down!

Trying too hard, but didn't end up looking like an olive at all...

Margaret
Vote: Thumbs down!

Too campy for me. I vote "ugly".

Mary
Vote: Thumbs down!

A red eyeball?

lyn
Vote: Thumbs down!

not professional in todays work place

Shelly
Vote: Thumbs down!

This doesn't strike me as looking like an olive plus the price is too high.

Cassie
Vote: Thumbs down!

It looks more like something from a sci-fi movie than an olive.

Eileen
Vote: Thumbs down!

It looks more like a red robot eye than an olive. This is ugly-weird.

Ashley
Vote: Thumbs down!

Doesn't look like an olive. I hate it.
