necktie skirtby Green 3
- the story
A great necktie is a piece of personality expressed in cloth: conservative stripes, crazy paisleys, or a playful print. But why should the men have all the fun?
This prep-tacular skirt takes the traditional tie and transforms it into something distinctly feminine. The skirt's wide front panel is crafted from the narrow and broad ends of upcycled neckties, creating a pallet of blues, reds, or greens. Some ties will be 100% silk, others will be silk blends, some ties are 100% rayon, some 100% cotton and still others will be wool blends. The back panel and lining are made with reclaimed suiting fabric. Secure the skirt in place with a hidden side button, and tie the front panel across at the opposite hip, and you're in business. Made in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

- the maker
Founded in 2006, Green3 is the brainchild of Sandy Martin, a Michigan farm girl turned apparel industry maven. Growing up on a farm, Sandy witnessed first-hand the health repercussions of conventional farming and pesticides. Later when she worked in the apparel industry, she saw how manufacturers negatively affected the environment and communities where they operated. So with the help of her husband Jim, Sandy founded an apparel company based on honesty, environmental awareness and high-quality American-made products.
Green 3 uses organic or recycled cotton in its products. The cotton is spun and knit into fabric, as well as screened and dyed with water-based inks in North Carolina. This process is completely green and uses no PVCs, plastisols, heavy-metal inks or chlorinated bleaches.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
From irregular T-shirts to the unusable ends of fabric bolts, Green 3 reengineers waste fabric from its own factories into creative items such as the Scraptee herbal pouch, the T-shirt scarf and UncommonGoods' new jewelry pouches. They also use secondhand materials from thrift stores and left over fabrics from garment manufacturers.
Made in America
Headquartered in a former horse carriage terminal from the 1800s, Green 3 is situated on the shores of Lake Winnebago in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and is dedicated to creating apparel jobs both there and throughout the U.S. Green 3 also works with Aspiro, a non-profit in Green Bay, Wisconsin that specializes in teaching job skills to cognitively disabled adults. Both the T-shirt scarves and suit totes are cut and sewn by adults in the program, giving them an opportunity for independent living. collection
