Cam Wilson

Cam Wilson of All Fours creates uniquely embossed patina copper albums.

Patina is the process of using a torch to produce a film on the metal through oxidation, which creates a weathered look.

His copper albums are warm and industrial, and one can sense the craftsmanship and love that goes into them. Wilson loves working with and forming metal, especially copper.

The process of using a torch is frustrating, he says, but it is the most rewarding part of his work. He loves the depth and painterly quality that develops from it. But by far the best part of his job is that he can spend every day working in the studio with his dogs.

Wilson was born in Palo Alto, CA, but has lived in San Francisco for the last 26 years. He splits his work between a ranch in Santa Rosa, where he does the torch work, and the three levels of a crumbling San Francisco Victorian in the lower Haight district where the assembly takes place.

He has a BA in Video Art from the California College of Art in Oakland, CA, and says if he weren't an artist he would be a video engineer.

Some of his first works were large metal sculptures made of old Cadillacs--but his current work developed after working with a jeweler and practicing with those types of tools and materials.

Wilson began using salvaged metal from a scrap yard, but now buys copper by the half-ton from a distributor. He uses recycled motorcycle inner tubes for the hinges.
