Hop to It!

You seem to have caught a bug! Symptoms include: smiles, chuckles and, in serious cases, even gut-wrenching laughs. Fred Conlon brings discarded steel and tools to life by transforming them into humorous ornaments that bring personality to your lawn or office.

In this quirky piece, Fred's imagination really gets hopping: An inverted hammer becomes this grasshopper's thorax, a pair of pliers becomes his pincers and bent nails put the spring in his step! Let this critter infest your office or leave him outside to give your garden an edge. As he sits perched in your lawn, this metal insect is designed to developing a unique, protective patina. Handmade by designer Fred Conlon in Utah.

Fred Conlon

Raised in Colorado, Fred Conlon lives now in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he makes garden sculptures out of recovered objects. For his helmet sculptures, he uses real recovered World War II helmets. "It is very satisfying to transform something once used in war into a peaceful garden decoration," he says. His work has been featured in Niche Magazine, the Salt Lake Tribune and HGTV. What would he be if he weren't an artist? "Happy...just kidding!" he answers. "I can't imagine doing anything else."
