"I Am the Captain of My Soul"

"I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul." The words of William E. Henley are inscribed on a sterling silver pendant with a 22 kt gold-plated brass compass rose overlay to help you captain your own soul. Henley, one of the first British poets to write in free verse, penned the words in 1875 for his poem "Invictus." Handmade by Kathy Bransfield in California.

UNCOMMON KNOWLEDGE: While in the hospital facing the amputation of his second foot (he had already lost one as a child), Henley befriended author Robert Louis Stevenson, and they collaborated on a few plays. Henley is actually the basis for Stevenson's famous character Long John Silver from the novel Treasure Island.

Artist card included.

Kathy Bransfield's early art career was full of "happy little trees;" she started out standing in front of the TV and painting along with legendary television artist Bob Ross. Today, she creates meaningful gold and sterling silver jewelry. Each piece is a reflection of her complex character, revealing an organic sentiment and creating a modern day heirloom. "I have looked to beautiful and powerful words to strengthen and heal me." Kathy says. "And I have looked to nature to do the same. I think within the jewelry there is a lovely balance of the two merging into one."

Kathy talks about her work on our blog.
