Bark Up The Right Tree.
The beauty of woodcraft and function grow together in this one-of-a-kind bowl, fashioned from the trunk of a mango wood tree. The flowing organic shape, delicate grain, and the warm hues of its unaltered bark distinguish this dense, ecologically forested trunk-turned-bowl. After 15 to 30 years, mango trees naturally stop bearing fruit, but after it's harvested and hand-carved, this malleable wood takes on a new life as a stunning home accent. The rich, sweeping grain of this hollowed out trunk make it a natural spot for snacks like mixed nuts or decorative accents like painted pinecones or potpourri.
When each mango tree is cut down, the roots remain intact to encourage regrowth. A sapling is also immediately planted to replace the harvested tree and to continue the cycle. Due to this careful process of harvesting and replanting, mango wood (or acacia) is a fully sustainable resource. This striking bowl comes from ecologically sound plantations, where no more trees are cut down than is ecologically permissible. Handmade in Thailand.

Love the idea, love the responsible harvesting of the trees. Do not love the unfinished outside of the bowl.... I can't imagine this would be at all easy to clean or care for to make this the functional piece I'd want it to be.

I like the design of the bowl, something new and different. I think the shape of the trunk and the sculpting of the bowl complement each other very well and that makes a statement. It might seem expensive, but from the description, the price might be worth it. Hopefully, it could last a long time and save money in the long run...

1) overpriced2) allergen concern, mango is related to poison ivy, if a salad which contains acid items (i.e. tomatoes, fruit or salad dressing) allergen may be released

These days, when a handmade product from another country, such as this, is advertised, we can be *sure* that the "Product Story" would highlight if it was fair trade, or a protected native group, or safety of workers and protection of environment. That sort of stuff. The fact that you haven't tells me this is probably of some average quality, average craftsmanship, mass produced by hand item. Therefore, it should be ignored by would-be purchsers until this company shares a little good news about the origin and life of this item.

Thanks for all of the comments and questions, voters! While the bowl isn't dishwasher safe, it can easily be cleaned with mild soap and water. It is finished with a food-safe sealant, but to be safe, it's best for use with dry foods--such as fruit, popcorn, or candy. The bowls are handcrafted by a fair trade artisans from small communities in South East Asia, and are made using sustainable mango wood. Thanks again for all of the questions and comments. Keep them coming!

Love this. I have a very large hand carved salad bowl carved out of madrone but it is so much lighter looking. Nice to know the background of the forests. How about a big serving size salad bowl instead. Am concerned about the bark coming off over time.
