Peel Away The Layers
Inspired by art's unpredictability, artist Hollie Chastain creates this vibrant collage that combines old and new. A lifelong collector of found and vintage paper, the Chattanooga-based artist was drawn to collage making because of its inherent storytelling quality. Beginning with a base layer of paper, Hollie works her way up, using contrasting and natural hues that bring the scene to life. Hints of Chastain’s life shine through in this sophisticated print, as elements of her graphic design past mingle with her mission to let the viewer find their own story within her work. Made in Tennessee and printed in Oregon.

- the maker
After leaving a career in graphic design I decided to get back in the studio to my analog roots. Collage was a medium that I had never given much thought to so it seemed perfect for a fresh start. I have always been a collector of found and vintage paper so there was plenty around to experiment with and I found that I really connected with the personality and history and additional story that reusing these vintage materials added to a work. Because I am self-taught in collage I feel a freedom to follow my gut and keep my process pure and love the contrast between old weathered and stained paper and bright colorful bursts. collection
