A Real Catch

It's about time this rope turned its life around. As "float-rope", it was once used to tether together underwater lobster traps off the coast of Maine, where it also posed a danger to the Northern Right Whale. Then, once such usage was outlawed, hundreds of thousands of pounds of leftover line threatened to flood into landfills.

Now, these wayward cords have been rehabilitated, finding new life as vibrant, earth-friendly baskets. Created using traditional basket weaving techniques, the ropes combine rugged sturdiness with bright, uplifting colors. A circle of pressboard inside provides the basket's bottom and helps it maintain its cylindrical shape. And whether it's toting picnic gear to the beach, or adding a nautical splash to your home, it's sure to bring nothing but goodwill from now on. Handmade in Down East, Maine.

  • Item ID: 21422
  • Materials: paper, recycled rope
  • 8" H x 10" Dia.

Katie found this reclaimed lobster rope basket, and we think it's quite the catch! Since these ropes, which once posed a danger to sea life (check out the product story to learn more), are no longer used for catching lobsters they're making waves in the form of handmade baskets. Does this potential product have your vote?

I would love a large version of this.

I have seen these all over the place as doormats, but never as baskets. The rope is very tough and would likely scratch the surface it rests on. Perhaps it would be more appealing in different colors?

nice looking basket, maybe a large one would be even nicer.

i like the design on this but for $36 i was expecting it to be bigger not 8 x 10. i wouldn't buy it. $36 should be a shopper size

The basket is cute; I like the idea of recycling the rope; but I wouldn't pay $36 for it.

Larry

Appealing form. Nice color choice. However this should be bigger because of the thickness of the rope. A larger size would also give it more presence as a decorative room accent.

a little too expensive but interesting enough that I think it will sell especially to seaport residents

I might have liked it more if other views would have showed me some of the highlights and size of this bag. Additional, it would be nice to have seen a single-sentence description of the process of reclaiming and dying the rope, i.e. XYZ method because it is better for the environment, and dyed using XYZ because it is safer or more natural, etc. the look and the idea.

No use for something like this and I feel the price is way too high - Thumbs Down

Rugged is what I love. Can hold heavier objects. Like the colors. Clever way to re-use leftover line. Would like in larger sizes too.

I agree with the comments about the price for the size being a bit high. Great idea and design ~ love that it uses something that might otherwise go to a landfill!

It is pricey but handmade and in the USA, no less! The only way to bring down the prices of these items that are made in the USA by hand is to purchase them!
