Everyone loves an insider wink, and bookworms will surely recognize Pemberley, Thornfield Garden, and 221B Baker Street–the names of some of Callie Meaney’s soy candles–as the sites of some time-tested literary adventures. (In this case, Pride & Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Sherlock Holmes, respectively.)

“I was happy to find something that combined artistry (drawing the labels) and the act of making something,” Callie says of her Literary Candles, which she pours by hand in Valley Stream, New York. Initially a side project for the recently graduated English major, the candles quickly became a full-time calling. When she started to use books as inspiration for the scents, that’s when the demand for her scented creations grew and her business truly turned the page.

The Perfect Gift for Literary Lovers!

      By

      from Houston, TX

      Comments about UncommonGoods Literary Candles:

I bought two of these candles, Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice, one for myself and one as a gift to my college counselor, who loves classic literture as much as I do. Normally I am not a huge fan of floral scents and when I first smelt the candles I was nervous that they would be too soapy. I thought Thornfield Garden smelt the best and so I gave it as a gift and kept Pemberly for myself. My fears at an overpowering and soapy smell have been relieved now that I've lit Pemberly. It instead has a subtle freshness. I cannot say how Thornfield Garden burns but I'm sure it is equally as lovely.

The candles smell so good and burn really nice. I love the jar look and how I can screw the top on so the smoke stays in the candle.

      Comments about UncommonGoods Literary Candles:

I bought two candles--the Pemberley candle for a friend and the Thornfield one for myself. The smell is a bit too perfumey/grandmotherly for my taste, but the literary aspect made it a fun gift.

(Also, the Thornfield candle is pink. I was expecting it to be more red.)

I absolutely loved the Sherlock themed 221B Baker Street candle. I purchased one for myself and one for a friend ( also a Sherlock enthusiast.) The scent is both earthy and crisp, without being overly sweet or overtly masculine. I adored the idea and concept for the literary themed candles, and was pleasantly surprised by the scent they created.
