Dry a Papaya

Made from dried Mexican papaya, this parchment bowl is a stunning centerpiece and guaranteed conversation piece. Artisan Margaret Dorfman hand builds each fragile bowl out of parchment made from slices of papaya through a 12-day process that includes curing, pressing and aging each piece. Place a glass votive candle inside the bowl for a warm orange glow or fill it with fragrant potpourri. Handmade in California. Each is one of a kind and will vary.

Artist card included.

Margaret Dorfman

Margaret's work is made by hand from over 40 different varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables that are cured, dried, pressed and aged in a 10-14 day process. The translucent parchments that result capture and preserve the jewel-like colors and intricate structures that are characteristic of each fruit or vegetable. She calls this Vegetable Parchment, because the texture and translucency calls to mind the vellum parchments of medieval Europe.

Margaret realized at an early age that the best materials like acorns, bark, moss and feathers weren't found in stores. She still believes that the best materials are found in unexpected places, such as Chinatown for lotus root and bok choy, small Mexican mercados for chili peppers and papaya, Japanese markets and Korean groceries for green necked daikon. Though she now uses a produce supplier, she still visits these places with an eye out for the novel.

Everything is cut by hand with an old-fashioned mandolin slicer and a wickedly sharp assortment of knives. Her studio follows sustainable practices, using reclaimed water and recyclable packaging, and no toxic products are used. Leftovers are composted, recycled or donated to the local zoo.

Margaret earned degrees in Linguistics and Anthropology from U.C. Davis. She then went on to gain fluency in American Sign Language, and worked for many years as a sign language interpreter. For the last 13 years she has done this work full-time at her studio in Northern California, where she lives with her husband and son.

"It is deeply satisfying to work with these fruit and vegetables," says Margaret. "There seems to be alchemy involved as they transform from the familiar and commonplace and become objects of unexpected beauty. But I know it is not magic--and I am not really creating something new. I am only uncovering what was always there to see."

Comments about LARGE MEXICAN PAPAYA BOWL:

This made a great gift for a friend that has space for fragile decorations. I like that you can see seeds and recognize the fruit that it's made from. It's incredibly bright and perfect for drawing attention. Makes a great conversation piece

Comments about LARGE MEXICAN PAPAYA BOWL:

My brother gave this bowl to me as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago. I recently had to throw it away.

I was keeping it on a display shelf in my home office. When it first arrived it was brightly colored and interesting - looked nice on display. Within several months, it began losing its shape, was torn on the edges in several places and the color was fading. The shape was so odd and the structure so flimsy that there was absolutely nothing that I could put into it. Within a couple of years of sitting around on a bookshelf, it wound up looking like a big floppy pile of fruit peeling. It's almost as if it decomposed on the shelf.

Admittedly, we live in Florida where it is very hot and humid most of the year. Maybe the humidity got to it, but the house is air conditioned 8 months of the year.

I do not recommend this product.

Saw these in Mexico while on vacation. [...]. Almost does not stand up and cannot put "battery" candle inside. Does not look like pictures. Really need to exchange it.

Comments about LARGE MEXICAN PAPAYA BOWL:

Unfortunately, the bowl was not structurally sound and would not stand up. Uncommon goods is sending a replacement, and I am hoping this one is better. It is a beautiful bowl, but was totally unusable the way it arrived.

I already own some of the small bowls and they are gorgeous, so I know that the quality is usually very good.

Comments about LARGE MEXICAN PAPAYA BOWL:

Online this bowl looks stunning - when I received it (a gift for my new in-law) I was dissapointied on the size and narrowness of the bowl. As others have described, it also had holes/tears in it at the bottom. My in-law uses it for potpourri - I wouldn't put a tealight candle in it though - to me, it looks like it would burn.

I wasn't very happy with this product, it was much smaller than I expected and didn't look like the photo on the website. I'm returning it. I don't feel as though it was worth the [$] I paid.

Comments about LARGE MEXICAN PAPAYA BOWL:

Very original and unique bowl. I appreciate that it is handmade and has an artsy look. Wish it was bigger, as I wouldn't describe it as "large". It is very fragile, so it really is for display only.

            Service and delivery comments:

Everything I have ever ordered from Uncommon Goods has always been packed extremely well.
