Born in the neighborhood of Brooklin (yes, with an i), São Paulo - Brazil, furniture designer Richard Velloso has made Brooklyn, New York his primary place of work and residence. Not just a designer, he also builds his own pieces and is one of the owners of his company, named after his chocolate lab, Olga, together with his two friends Renato Yoshima and Leon Yugrakh. Olga’s work is done using rough reclaimed materials, hard or soft woods - from fallen timbers to 100 year old warehouse beams and even old industrial factory flooring - mixed in with steel, occasionally featuring concrete and glass. However “brute” the materials might be at first, the pieces are infused with modern aesthetics, industrial influences and clean geometrical designs. This is due to Richard’s venerable respect and passion for some of the greats of architecture and design such as Philip Johnson, Oscar Niemeyer, I.M. Pei, Joaquim Tenreiro, Jorge Zalszupin and Louis Kahn. Richard is very hands-on at Olga, to say the least; from the designing process to the selection of materials, the cutting, sanding, welding, assembly and finishing, he gets his hands dirty and sometimes even burnt. Now at their new location in Sunset Park, Richard and the team are busy at work creating new designs and interior spaces for restaurants, hotels, retail spaces, and homes - we love to do it all.
Underneath It All
Like the crystal smooth surface of a pond that is teeming with life underneath, this side table is a striking study in contrast. On top, it offers a circular surface of handsome walnut hardwood, beautifully featuring its rich, chocolate brown grain. But while a traditional table would support itself with a quartet of proper, right angled legs, this table has a cluster of legs in many sizes exploding out at all different angles. Made from hexagonal steel, they are carefully placed to keep the table perfectly stable and supported, but their unexpected layout seems to suggest an edge of chaos, the life-giving arteries of a heart, or the organic branching out of tree roots in soil. Whether alone or paired with its matching coffee table, the Kaos Side Table is perfectly suited to match both the yin and the yang of your contemporary living room. Handmade by Richard Velloso in Brooklyn, New York.
