Leap of Faith

Inspired by a return to college after a 20-year hiatus, tattoo artist Matthew Amey's "Jump Off" series encapsulates the artist's personal meditations on the transience of youth and the uncertainty of adulthood.

He explores the implications of these reflective thoughts and feelings with a depiction of the nostalgic sentiment of freedom coupled with stark, gestural strokes and symbolic details. In the enthralling design, a child is suspended mid-leap while a flock of birds circles the tree's branches. The tree represents stability, safety, comfort, excitement, and the all-encompassing love of family, while the birds represent the opportunities and challenges the child will encounter as he or she reaches life's crossroads.

With its strikingly straightforward duality, the piece juxtaposes a child's carefree nature with an adult's projection of the future, using a personal and universal childhood experience as an opportunity for deep expression. Limited edition of 200 sequentially numbered prints made with oil-based inks on Somerset textured paper. Contemporary black frame. Made in Newark, Delaware and hand signed.

This captures the spirit of childhood so well. I have tucked a letter on the back of the print for my grandson to read when I have moved on to let him know how much I treasured the time we spent together. I hope it will bring him the same good feeling it has brought to me.

Love the message in the print! Bought this for my son for his Birthday-he is 9 and likes it a lot! Enough so that he asked it be displayed in the kitchen/dining area so everyone can see it.

Matthew's illustration reminds us of the books we read as children, and we're intrigued by the idea of jumping into the outside world. What do you love about this piece?

I love this piece. I don't think there is anything Matthew Amey has created that I haven't loved. Probably another piece I will have to purchase to hang in my home.
