San Francisco-based artist Vanessa Gade turns the interplay of pendant and chain into a dynamic sculptural statement. Inspired by her city's inherent dualism, marked by its powerful feats of engineering (like the Golden Gate Bridge) and its peaceful Southern Californian shorelines, Vanessa captures this rich and varied landscape in the motion and tension of her bold, kinetic pieces.
In this particular necklace, Vanessa was compelled to utilize the strong shape of the circle in a way that she had never seen before. She wanted to create a piece that would be both unique and thought provoking, but that would also celebrate the shape in a clean and uncluttered fashion. Her vision was realized in this striking sterling silver necklace and this pair of earrings, as well as this necklace, in which a circle, articulated in oxidized sterling silver, is interlaced with a crisscrossed net of 14 karat, gold-filled chain that glides fluidly with the wearer's movement. The unique relationship between the negative and positive space in Vanessa's pieces emphasizes their dependency on each other in a romantic and beautiful way, evoking our deep connection and reliance on those who support us. It was Vanessa's passion for history and photography that initiated her path to jewelry design. While studying to become a historian at the University of California, San Diego she volunteered to help construct the new darkroom on campus, directly adjacent to the metalsmithing studio. I like the design, I think the contrasting metals is very nice. This design could also be a very popular gift for expectant mom's (symbolizing child in womb)! Very unique gift.

I like the gold ring but not he oxidized silver one. Shiny silver would have looked better. The chain looks tarnished, although it is not. A silver chain would look much better.

I love the pendant, and the explanation, but don't like the choice of chain. Something smooth, and flat in design...of polished metal, either silver or gold, would continue the feel of the pendant, rather than looking utilitarian.
