Off the Ice

Sit back, relax and count your remaining teeth in this one-of-a-kind rocking chair handmade with reclaimed hockey sticks and unfinished Canadian cedar. Tall, fanned out hockey sticks add an unexpected visual element to the classic rocker. Handmade by Mike Bellino in Massachusetts.

The hockey sticks are treated with a polyurethane finish. Remaining wood is left untreated. Bellino allows wood to undergo a natural finishing process called "checking," which creates naturally-occuring cracks that do not compromise the integrity of the wood. Cover if left outside. Unfinished cedar will patina and weather if left out in the elements, which is the artist's intention. If you prefer to keep the chair as is, treat it with a polyurethane finish or wood stain.

Available in Adult and Child size. Sold separately.

Unfortunately, this item cannot ship outside of the United States at this time.

Michael Bellino

Michael Bellino started making Ski chairs back in 1993 after purchasing a house on a lake and building an enormous dock that needed furniture.

Looking for an alternative to plastic patio furniture, he found inspiration in O'Neils Bike and Ski Shop, which he managed. Two weeks and two prototypes later, he created the first Ski chair with his old racing and bump skis. Michael says he's still sitting in that original chair today!

Over the next few years he expanded the product offering using different types of sports equipment. Understanding the importance of recycling, Michael recycles all types of sports equipment, uses recycled plastic for bench legs and ships all of the larger products in recycled bicycle boxes.

"I consider myself more of a deck and dock carpenter, but by trade, I graduated with an electrical engineering degree, and creating furniture was really a leap of faith." Michael says. "...The engineering degree will probably come in handy when I decide to add a lighting system to the Ski chair!"

Currently, Michael and his team recycles over 20,000 pieces of sports equipment each year, which includes snow and water skis, wake and snow boards, hockey sticks, baseball bats and golf clubs.

Recently, Michael has worked with these different types of sports equipment to create smaller items, at lower price points, such as wine racks. collection
