Home Where the Heart Is

It's been said that, no matter where you go, there will always be invisible threads that tie you to your home. These custom wall art plaques make those threads visible - and the results are strikingly beautiful. On a brightly painted background of reclaimed pine, the US state of your choice is outlined in tightly-spaced, hand-painted nails, and marking the spot near the physical heart of your favorite state is a symbolic heart to show your love. The artist, Eleanor Mathis, then weaves painted embroidery thread to create a starburst pattern that radiates from that heart to fill the entire state. Handmade in the USA.

Sold individually.

  • Item ID: 21250
  • Materials: acrylic paint, plywood, reclaimed pine, sewing thread, nails
  • 11.5" L x 11.5" W x .75H

A Texas girl now living in Mississippi, Eleanor Mathis is drawn to maps. She says, "Each place I've lived, and each person I've met has profoundly shaped who I am." Her handcrafted decorative artwork celebrates the irregular shapes of map borderlines, transforming them into beautiful, geometric abstractions, while still honoring the strong emotional bonds we form with special places. Her geographic string art creations playfully combine industrial materials with midcentury-inspired whimsy. See all creations.

New York is our home, so of course the Empire State has a special place in our hearts here at UncommonGoods. Would you commemorate your favorite state with this creative wall art? Do you prefer a bold, colored background, or soothing, natural wood? Don't string us along...share your feedback!

Beautiful idea. A great thing to have when you live far away from home.

Oh my goodness, this is one of the most beautifully stunning wall art pieces I've ever seen! I cannot wait to get one. It's just....beautiful!!!

If I'm paying for a work of art like this, I'd certainly hope that there weren't chips out of the background boards, as there are in these pics. Overpriced in my opinion.

Beautiful artistry. I love the fusion of head and heart with a bow to the environment.

Liane- the chips are because the backboard is made of birch plywood. And I can't believe I'm saying this, but the price actually seems quite reasonable if you think about how much work goes into a piece like this (the threading). How much time DOES go into a piece like this, out of curiosity??

Bold background for sure. Love this idea. I hope they choose it so I can ask for one for my birthday!

Has a summer camp craft look

While I absolutely appreciate the work that goes into a piece like this, I cannot escape the feeling that these look like the string art of the early 70s. These ARE more polished or elegant - no multicolored thread or brushed velvet background. I love the idea of showing the heart of the state, just not the medium.

My only additional thought would be if people could request the heart to be around someone's hometown or other location of choice :)

Love the idea and would purchase one if it wasn't for the high price. $40 max--you have to take into consideration shipping costs which adds around $15. Having said that, I might pay the $90 price if you could get the heart custom made to "heart" the city where you live in the state. Now, that would be cool.

Don't like the background colors...cheapens the piece.

Price is to high.

I would definitely purchase if the following two options became available:1.) I want to choose where the heart of my state would be, aka my hometown.2.) While I like the bold colors, I would prefer different wood stain options, like a dark mahogany.

Eleanor

Hi! I am the creator of these pieces and am LOVING hearing your feedback! Just wanted to answer a few questions/concerns. - I personally like the more natural wood look, but the chips out of the bottom could be sanded down or filled in.-I have done almost every color, including plain stained wood- what colors would you be interested in seeing? Or do you like just plain wood with more of the natural grain showing? I'd love to hear people's preference!-As for the price, I totally understand the concern. However, each piece is hand cut, patterned, painted, nailed, strung and carefully packed. The process takes between 4-6 hours, depending on the size and detail of the state, so the price reflects that.Again, thanks so much for the feedback! Keep it coming!

I love this idea, but the price seems high for something I can technically make myself.

Super cute idea...way too expensive for the materials being used

Can we put the heart where we want? Like, I grew up in Nebraska (Omaha), can I have the heart centered there?

Lori
Vote: Thumbs up!

I like the concept, but I think they're overpriced.

Looks like something I can make with items from a local hardware store.

Love the idea, however, it looks a little on the cheap side. And the price definitely does not reflect that...........

A little pricey though

The detail on these pieces looks amazing! The colors are bright & fun. I'd definitely buy one for myself, and I can think of friends who would love one, too. To me, they definitely look like they'd be worth the price.

I LOVE this item, but I would definitely not pay $90 for it. That price is much too steep. A better price would be half the estimate amount, at $45.

What a waste of $90.

Love them BUT too high a price for me to consider buying.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this product!!! I want to collect 1 for every state my family and I have traveled to through the years..They are priced just right to give as gifts as well..So creative too..The only thing I would love to see different about this product is to offer a few background colors choices, rather than just teal and red..

Wonderful idea! I do agree with another reviewer re the chips in the background board. They detract from the art, and if the display piece is flawed, what might the subsequent ones look like? Though I voted thumbs up, it is with a very large caveat that better quality assistance is utilitzed!

I think these are really neat and creative ways for someone to show others where they've been or where they come from. These are a type of thing I would expect to see for sale at Uncommon Goods!! Love these :)

Seems like a high price. Cute, though.

I LOVE this. It's absolutely wonderful, but I do struggle a bit with the price. It seems a bit out of the range of what I'd pay for it.

This is a very great idea and I love it. For some people where they come from is very important and this will always remind them of home when they have to move for reasons out of their control. Especially for someone like my cousin who had to move because her job requires it.

Calimoore

I would buy this for a wedding gift.

Donna Lee

Another produst that I hope to see from Uncommon Goods. I'm just hopefully that the price comes down so I can purchase one!

Ryan

I really love this I from Cali and I live in va right now would so live to have one of this in my house.

Melissa

I agree with several others here that the price is too high. At this price I would buy one - at a slightly lower price, i would probably buy several. I have lived in numerous states (Military) and could see these being a collection of our moves, or gifts for friends. Maybe $60-75 depending on the complexity of the peice (Lets face it, not all states are complicated, lol!)

Britney

I would prefer a more subtle background so as to match more interior decor, or if possible, no background - but I love the idea and would definately purchase one
