Swell Swills

Resembling props plucked from a Civil War-era canteen, these iconic swill jugs enter the 21st-century as a swoon-worthy, functional sculptures in potter Daniel Bellows' hand-thrown interpretations. Taking his inspiration from a book of antebellum American antiques, Daniel reimagined and juxtaposed these rugged bottles' forms in elegant porcelain that is further softened with gray and ombre lavender and periwinkle glazes applied in brushy strokes across tactile slabs of fired ceramic. These slender homages to the pitchers of the past add artistry to interiors as they recall visions of saloons, sheriffs, and moonshine. Handmade in the USA.

location

Massachusetts

Daniel Bellow's pottery is hand-thrown on his potter's wheel in a 19th-century carriage barn in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. His work is all about form. He single-glazes his pottery and lets the kiln do the rest. The kiln in question has a reduction atmosphere, which yields uniquely rich glazes.

Daniel notes that "things that are made by hand have a life of their own, a spirit that machine made objects, no matter how well designed, are lacking. Surround yourself with useful, beautiful things made by real people. A life well-lived is itself a work of art."
