Still Life with Flowers

Ikebana is the haiku of flower arrangements. Instead of filling a vase with a riot of color, it's about making sure each stem, each petal is placed with care and appreciation for its unique beauty. Ikebana vases are typically made from ceramic, but designer Dennis Kugizaki was inspired to create his using the organic asymmetry of wood.

These vases are crafted from crosscut maple burls, where the wood grain twists and coils within their form, either round or rectangular, and each resting on a steady base. Inset into that wood, Kugizaki places a shallow water container with floral pins in its base. Known as the "kinsen", this allows you to arrange your flowers in a way that showcases not just the blossoms of your flowers, but the full, natural beauty of their stems and leaves. Each vase becomes the canvas for you to create your own, living poetry. Handmade in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Dennis Kugizaki

My Dad used to say, "Dennis does not take my advice... he has to find out everything on his own." As a visual artist, graphic designer, athlete and woodworker, this is how I have developed all my creative objects. Experiment, modify, change, visualize, do it again. I started young... my kindergarten teacher said that I could draw a circle smaller than any other kid. Whatever that means... maybe attention to detail. I am pretty much a free spirit and live in the moment. After trying many spiritual realms, I have found that Buddhist meditation is the best fitting. In a nutshell, that’s about it!
