“I wanted to be a blacksmith, but I wasn’t physically strong enough,” says Rhonda Wyman, who–to the delight of her fans–became a metalsmith instead. Alongside her husband and business partner Elijah, Rhonda crafts whimsical jewelry out of the couple’s New England studio. Oxidized sterling silver is the couple’s medium of choice. “Not too many people were using” the material when the Wymans first made it one of their calling cards, but Rhonda praises it as a more natural and low-maintenance alternative to traditional silver. “The patina we use is non-toxic,” Rhonda notes, adding that it is also less prone to tarnishing and has a darker, moodier appeal. “We’re always trying to make something that stands out without shouting,” she says.
