Design duo Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg of Nervous System give the classic jigsaw puzzle a 21st-century revamp by completely re-imagining this old-school form of entertainment as an interactive contemporary art piece.
Combining the pair's passion for nature, science, technology, and the puzzles they pieced together as children, this design-inclined jigsaw uses custom software that simulates dendritic solidification, a complex crystal growth process that resembles the formation of snowflakes. A laser cutter then translates these one-off, organic patterns into a unique set of interlocking plywood pieces whose amoebic shapes can be just as challenging to connect as any 1,000-piece classic.
Finding a kindred spirit in generative artist Jonathan McCabe, the team applies his diffused landscapes to their jigsaws giving challenge seekers a one-of-a-kind contemporary piece of art to discover. Once assembled, you can display your artful accomplishment with pride, or you can break it up and save it for the next time you'd like to brighten up a rainy day. Designed, printed, and cut in Somerville, Massachusetts.
